Automobile sales hit a positive note in FY 2016-17

Automobile sales hit a positive note in FY 2016-17 with positive growth across all segments except three-wheelers. Passenger vehicles sales crossed three million sales mark withstanding the crisis ridden months after demonetisation. The industry recorded overall growth of 6.81 per cent in last fiscal over FY16.
 
Passenger vehicles came up with outstanding figures with growth of 9.23 per cent in FY17. Within the passenger vehicles, passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans grew by 3.85 per cent, 29.91 per cent and 2.37 per cent respectively during April-March 2017.
 
The overall commercial vehicles segment registered a growth of 4.16 per cent in FY17. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) grew by 0.04 per cent and Light Commercial Vehicles grew by 7.41 per cent over the same period last year. 
 
Three-wheelers sales declined by (-) 4.93 per cent in April-March 2017. Unlike three-wheelers, two-wheelers sales registered a growth at 6.89 per cent. Within the segment, scooters registered maximum growth of 11.39 per cent while motorcycles grew by 3.68 per cent. Mopeds grew by healthy 23.02 per cent. In FY17, overall automobile exports declined by 4.50 per cent.
 
Carmakers achieved their best domestic sales figures in the month of March. The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki reported a domestic sale of 1,27,999 vehicles, growing at 7.7 per cent over March 2016. Mr R S Kalsi, Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) said, “Demand for the company’s products remains strong and it continues to see healthy orders for products such as Brezza and Baleno.”
 
Hyundai, the second-largest player in the Indian market, reported a growth of 8.6 per cent in March. Mr Rakesh Srivastava, Senior V-P (sales and marketing), Hyundai Motor India, said three products — Grand i10, Elite i20 and Creta — drove the March numbers, which stood at 44,757 vehicles.
 
Utility vehicle major M&M reported a decline of six per cent in March. The company sold 25,352 units in last month. Tata Motors has reported a strong volume growth of 84 per cent for March. The company sold 15,433 vehicles in the domestic market during March. Its volume growth in FY17 was 22 per cent. Mr Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, said the demand remained high for Tiago and Hexa. The company recently launched a compact sedan Tigor and anticipates stronger growth ahead.
 
Honda recorded growth of 8.7 per cent after a long gap on account of two new products — the new City and WR-V. The company sold 18,950 units in March. Toyota showed a much stronger performance with 81 per cent growth last month. The company sold 13,796 units in March. Mr N Raja, Director and Senior V-P, (sales and marketing), said, “Toyota is riding on two products — Innova Crysta and Fortuner.”
 
Renault, which has seen a strong growth in past many months owing to Kwid, is apparently seeing a base effect. Its volume declined by 1.9 per cent at 12,188 units in March. A healthy double-digit growth was also posted by Ford, Nissan and Volkswagen.
