BEST set to add 1,500 AC buses to its fleet

BEST AC bus

Mumbaikars will soon have improved connectivity to railway and Metro stations as BEST is all set to procure 1,000 midi and mini buses along with 500 electric buses.

BEST will be issuing the Request for Proposal (RFP) for these 1,500 buses within a fortnight and proposes to complete the tendering process by the end of this year.

BEST already has 3,337 buses. These 1,500 new buses will be in addition to the 450 buses for which contracts have already been issued. The first lot of 112 buses out of 450 is expected to arrive by September.

The midi buses have a seating capacity of 31 and a standing capacity for another 12 commuters. Whereas, mini buses have a seating capacity of 21 commuters and a standing space for another eight commuters.

BEST has seen a drastic fall in the number of commuters, which has come down to 24 lakh per day, the lowest in a decade. With this enhanced fleet, the company is targeting those it had lost to autos and share cabs on feeder routes to railway and metro stations.

The mini and midi buses as well as the electric ones will be air-conditioned and procured on the wet leading model. Dr. Surendra Kumar Bagde, GM of BEST, said, “The difference in fares between the AC and non-AC buses was hardly 15 per cent which encouraged us to go for an all-AC fleet instead of conventional buses.”

The 500 electric buses will be procured on the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Buses (FAME-2) scheme of the Central Government, but will still be on wet-leasing. The administration is looking at deploying these mini buses on routes wherein conventional buses could not ply owing to its large size.
