CS Santosh tops Moto class at Desert Storm rally

CS Santosh receiving the trophy

Suzuki Motorcycle India (SMIPL) teamed up with India’s best rally-raid rider CS Santosh to take top spot in the Moto Class at the Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm 2016 rally. The rally recently concluded in Jodhpur.

Santosh now has three wins in a row at the Desert Storm rally. Riding his Suzuki RMX450Z Rally motorcycle, CS Santosh defended the champion’s tag in style as he won by a handsome margin of over nine minutes ahead of many worthy competitors. The rally covered a total distance of around 800 km in soaring temperatures and testing conditions.

Santosh prepared for the grueling rally by practising on the Suzuki Quadsport Z400 quad bike. “The valuable practice time spent riding the Suzuki Quadsport Z400 stood me in good stead in the rally. In fact, I would recommended that cross-country riders should prepare themselves by spending some time riding this true-blooded racing quad. It’s fast and it’s demanding to ride,” Santosh said.

But unlike his two previous wins in the Desert Storm rally, Santosh’s third victory came amidst high drama in stages 10 and 11. The rider was slapped with a penalty of 60 minutes as he failed to spot the passage control to get his time card stamped for reasons of bad visibility due to the dust kicked up by the cars ahead of him.

But Santosh went into the final two stages with a hugely motivated charge to finish with an overall lead of nine plus minutes to seal his win. “I made it difficult for myself. The time penalty for missing out on the passage control came at the most inopportune moment. However, that’s rallying, anything can happen. I am very pleased with this win and even more with the way the Suzuki RMX450Z Rally performed in these conditions,” Santosh said.

For the 2016 Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm, the two-time Dakar participant rode the rally edition of the Suzuki RMX450Z, which carried special parts from the Dakar version of the motorcycle. Among the changes include a carbon-fibre sub-frame that also served as auxiliary fuel tanks, Ohlin suspension system and bigger cooling system. For this rally, Jordi Grau, who runs the Suzuki Spain Team in the Dakar Rally, came down to lend his technical expertise.

Santosh further said, “The modifications that we carried out on the bike helped us to eke out even more performance from the machine. It also improved the handling of the bike. I am extremely thankful to Suzuki for lending their unstinted support.”
