Cross-badging with Toyota hurts Baleno sales

02/11/2019 | Author: Autoguide | 0 Comments Back To Home   < Previous News   |   Next news >

Maruti Baleno

Cross-badging strategies between alliance partners in the automobile sector have never paid off in India, said a report published in a prominent business daily.

A recent instance of cross-badging not taking off, it said, is of Toyota Glanza and Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The launch of the Toyota-badged premium hatchback has unwittingly seen Maruti Suzuki Baleno sales moving southward.

Both companies, however, say they aren’t worried as the benefits would come in the long term as the partnership covers more products and technology. While some analysts too express similar views, some others are concerned about the immediate impact on Maruti Suzuki’s sales, said the newspaper report.

Cross-badged vehicles are essentially the same vehicles with minimal design change between alliance partners. Toyota and Suzuki’s 2017 partnership resulted in Maruti Suzuki sharing the Baleno, one of the best sellers in the company’s portfolio since its launch in October 2015, with Toyota.

Baleno's sales have been sliding ever since the Toyota Glanza has hit the market in June. Baleno's monthly sales have now tapered to 12,000 units a month from 15,000-16,000 units it sold a year before the Toyota Glanza launch.

The Baleno-Glanza script currently looks similar to that of models such as Nissan Sunny-Renault Scala and Volkswagen Vento-Skoda Rapid.

Maruti Suzuki Chairman Mr RC Bhargava, however, seemed unfazed by the market behaviour. He told the newspaper in a recent interview that there was no concern over cross badging. In fact, by sharing, the cost of production comes down and overheads get spread over a larger volume, he said, adding: "I am increasing my market rather than decreasing it.”

An analyst at a foreign brokerage house said Glanza could mean potential customer loss for Maruti Suzuki, given that internally and externally there was no change between the two models. He said Glanza could make a dent on the market share of Maruti Suzuki in a weak passenger vehicle market.
