Festival spirit boosts Sept sales

PV sales grew due to festive season

The ongoing festival spirit spurred passenger vehicle sales in the month of September with most of the manufacturers recording double-digit growth. All OEMs that had recently launched new models, particularly, fared better. The utility vehicles segment boosted sales for most of the manufacturers.

The passenger vehicles segment grew 11.3 per cent with market leader Maruti Suzuki India continuing to lead the race. The company recorded domestic sales of 1,50,521 units, up 9.6 per cent from 1,37,277 units in September 2016. Compact cars like the Swift, Estilo, Dzire and Baleno lead the charge with a growth of 44.7 per cent to 72,804 units. However, the mid-size sedan Ciaz saw a decline of 14.4 per cent at 5,603 units and mini-cars like Alto and WagonR also declined 13.3 per cent at 38,479 units.

The domestic sales of number two player Hyundai Motor India grew 17 per cent with 50,028 units, up from 42,605 units sold during the corresponding period last year. Mr Rakesh Srivastava, Director, Sales and Marketing, HMIL, attributed this growth to the multiplier effect of performance of newly-launched next-gen Verna with sales of over 6,000 units, along with the strong pull for Creta, Elite i20 and Grand i10 during this festive season.

Mahindra & Mahindra registered a growth of 23 per cent to 25,327 units in September 2017 against 20,537 units in the same month last year. Mr Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, M&M, said, “The auto industry has witnessed a buoyant demand in September leading up to the festive season. This upsurge has been witnessed both in urban and rural markets. We are particularly happy with the performance of our Scorpio brand which has had its highest monthly sales in September.”

Honda Cars India recorded healthy growth of 21 per cent at 18,257 units against 15,034 units in same month last year.

Tata Motors saw its sales rising by 18 per cent at 17,286 units. The sales momentum has been augmented by the strong demand for its new-generation vehicles Tiago, Tigor and Hexa. The newly-launched compact SUV, Nexon, also received good traction in the market.

“With a growth of 18 per cent in September 2017, we have recorded highest sales since November 2012. With the on-going festive season, the consumer sentiment continues to remain positive and we are optimistic of maintaining this positive trend”, according to Mr Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor came up with domestic sales of 12,335 units for the month, a growth of 2 per cent. Ford India continued its downward trajectory recording domestic wholesales of 8,769 vehicles, against 9,018 units a year ago, down by 3.7 per cent.

The commercial vehicles segment also witnessed double-digit growth of 25 per cent in September 2017. Tata Motors recorded sales increase of 29 per cent at 36,679 units. The sales grew on the back of ramp-up in production and demand for new products. Ashok Leyland grew by 28 per cent at 15,370 units. For M&M, sales were up 19 per cent at 19,201 units. VECV sold 6,083 units in September 2017, recording a growth of 25.6 per cent.

Three-wheeler segment registered growth of 19 per cent while two-wheelers grew by 9 per cent. Among two-wheelers, scooter sales increased by 13.1 per cent in September 2017. Sales of motorcycles and mopeds went up by 7 and 8.3 per cent respectively.
