ICAT certifies first BS-VI truck engine for Eicher

Eicher Trucks & Buses received BS-VI certification

The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) recently completed the first BS-VI certification for a heavy duty engine model for Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicle (VECV) in the country. With this, Eicher has become the first CV manufacturer to be certified BS-VI compliant for over 3.5T GVW CNG engines.

ICAT successfully completed the compliance test of a product much ahead of the implementation date of April 1, 2020. This gives sufficient time for product stabilisation in terms of further working on making it more robust and cost competitive for the end consumers, an official release stated.

ICAT is adequately equipped with all the state-of-art equipment and laboratories required to carry out the testing and validation trials for the upcoming BS-VI regulations to help the industry with their testing and certification requirement. Additionally it has resources and teams to help the industry in their product development requirements in line with the requirements of the upcoming Indian and international regulations including turnkey product development requirements.

Commenting on the development, Mr Vinod Aggarwal, MD & CEO, VE Commercial Vehicles, said, “We have already been producing Euro VI compliant engines for Volvo Group and used that expertise in developing a CNG BS-VI solution, much ahead of the industry norms. Going forward, we are confident of introducing this as a robust and competitive solution for the end customers.”

The certification process gave both ICAT and VECV much exposure on certain key areas to be kept in view while undertaking the BS-VI development and certification testing.

ICAT is the first of the new world-class centres established under the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) with the main objective of carrying out Research & Development besides extending homologation facilities in the field of automotive engineering.

With the capital investment of over Rs 1,100 crore and the facilities spread over 8 acres at ICAT Centre-I and over 46.6 acres at ICAT Centre-II, the centre is rendering valuable services to the automotive industry in the country in a major way. It currently undertakes homologation and certification, testing, developmental projects and automotive R&D projects.
