Manufacturers opting for uniform pricing for cars

Uniform all-India price

With the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) across the country, vehicle manufacturers are making a shift towards ‘one nation-one price’ for their new car launches. The change is witnessed among mass segment OEMs, who are coming up with single ex-showroom price for cars.

Replacing the old indirect taxes system, GST is facilitating this change with all local taxes subsumed under it. Earlier, some luxury carmakers had shifted to a uniform all-India price last year, but now the change is visible among mass segment manufacturers.

Recently, Toyota Kirloskar Motor announced uniform prices for its new mid-size sedan Yaris. “The Yaris comes at an introductory price in the range Rs 8.75 lakh Rs 14.07 lakh. Toyota has decided to keep the prices the same across the nation,” the company informed. This is the first instance of uniform pricing by the carmaker in India. The on-road prices of the sedan may still vary between states/cities due to a lack of uniform road tax and registration charges.

According to Mr N Raja, Deputy MD, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, “A big enabler in realising one nation-one price was the roll-out of the GST. ” Also, Ford revealed the price of its Freestyle compact utility vehicle, at an all-India ex-showroom price beginning Rs 5.09 lakh. Other companies are likely to follow Toyota Kirloskar and Ford.

Mr R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki, said, “The company would bring in a uniform price for its new products. It is a good practice and leads to transparency.”
