The launch ceremony

Maruti Suzuki’s top-selling car comes with a robust
design, enhanced space and powerful performance
The third-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR, with a completely new design, was launched in New Delhi on January 23. The Big New WagonR has been built on a new platform and gets the 1.2-litre petrol engine along with the existing 1-litre unit.
The 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR has gone on sale in the country at a starting price of Rs 4.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
First launched in 1999, the new WagonR comes primarily in three variants - LXI, VXI and ZXI, offered in seven iterations based on the engine and transmission option. It comes with two petrol engines on offer - 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre, motors and the company's automated manual transmission system Auto Gear Shift (AGS) is offered as an option with engine options.
The new WagonR is set to compete in the country with the likes of the new-gen Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago.
According to the company, the new WagonR is poised to impress customers with its bold design, enhanced space, comfort, next-generation infotainment system and advanced K-series engine offering excellent fuel-efficiency and driving pleasure. A true tall boy, the vehicle has a robust body language with a wide stance, which makes it strikingly attractive, said a company press release.
The Big New WagonR is engineered and built on fifth-generation HEARTECT platform. The platform, said the release, increases safety of occupants through effective absorption of impact and dispersion of crash energy and assures stability. Use of 40 per cent high tensile steel provides better strength, safety, rigidity and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance.
In addition to the well proven 1.0 L engine, the Big New WagonR comes with a stronger heart of 1.2 L engine that delivers powerful performance.
The new WagonR offers excellent fuel-efficiency for both the engine options: 21.5 km/l for 1.2 L variant and 22.5 km/l for 1.0 L variant, which is nearly 10 per cent higher than the outgoing model.
Launching the Big New WagonR, Mr Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, said, “We are delighted to present the latest generation of one of our most successful models – Over the years WagonR has become the choice of more than 2.2 million families. We are confident that the new WagonR with its all new robust design, dynamically crafted and spacious interiors, SmartPlay Studio, strong HEARTECT platform and Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology will become the choice of many more Indian families.”
The company and its partners have invested approx. Rs 670 crore for the development of Big New WagonR.
Use of high-tensile steel helps to improve overall safety, rigidity and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance of the vehicle. Safety features, including driver airbag, ABS (antilock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution), front seat belts reminder, speed alert system and rear parking sensors are standard across variants. The car meets all applicable regulations including offset, side crash and pedestrian safety norms.
For the new-generation connected customers, the new WagonR comes with next-generation SmartPlay Studio Infotainment system. It is a 17.78 cm touch infotainment system that combines smartphone, vehicle and cloud-based services to offer a delightful driving experience. Its interface is vibrant and customizable. In addition to listening to favourite music, one can surf news, get the latest weather updates and also locate eateries around the area.
Since its debut, WagonR has over 2.2 million happy customers and the car continues to feature among the top five best-selling cars in the country for nearly two decades.
