Review subsidy on high-end e-scooters: SMEV

SMEV Report

The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) has requested the Ministry of Heavy Industries to reconsider the proposed subsidy structure on high-end electric scooters under the FAME 2 scheme.
In a letter to the Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister, Mr Anant Geete, the association has flagged off concerns with regard to the Government giving three times subsidy to few models of e-scooters, which are expensive, consume more electricity and do not have an advantage over the petrol scooters.

Mr Sohinder Gill, Director, SMEV, said, “Those models seem to be more for rich customers. SMEV has flagged off concerns with regard to the Government giving three times subsidy to few models of e-scooters. Adding to it are the skyrocketing battery replacement costs compared to the ones which are affordable, consume much lesser electricity, are lower in running cost and have much lower battery replacement cost.”

Speaking to a prominent news daily, Mr Gill said that the Government is only thinking about the upfront incentive, but there is a need to think about the incentive on running the vehicle. Last month too, the association had raised concerns over proposed cap of incentive to 20 per cent of ex-factory price of EVs under FAME II scheme, saying it would adversely affect the two-wheelers segment.

Mr Gill, in his earlier letter, said that this is drastically reducing the incentive on affordable e-two-wheelers, making them unaffordable for the common man. The Government had launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India (FAME India) scheme in 2015, offering incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles of up to Rs 29,000 for bikes and Rs 1.38 lakh for cars.
