The launch ceremony

Tata Motors on January 23 launched its sports utility vehicle Harrier after a four-year development schedule. The premium SUV is priced from Rs 12.69 lakh onwards (ex-showroom, Delhi), and will be available in four variants to begin with, with the top-end variant priced at Rs 16.25 lakh.

Though company officials have not positioned the five-seater SUV in any category, media reports say Harrier’s price band puts it in direct competition with  Mahindra XUV 500, Jeep Compass, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta and the upcoming SUVs from Kia and MG Motors.

According to the company, Harrier is a global SUV, offering a perfect combination of design and excellence. Engineered on Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMERGA) Architecture, Harrier promises to offer exemplary driving dynamics on varied terrains. It is the first vehicle to sport the IMPACT Design 2.0 design language of Tata Motors, which will appeal to customers with its stunning exteriors and luxurious interiors.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Guenter Butschek, CEO and MD, Tata Motors, said, “We showcased the H5X Concept at the Delhi Auto Expo 2018 with a promise to bring it to the Indian market in early 2019. Honouring the same commitment, I am elated to present to you the Harrier today. With this product, Tata Motors has rightfully entered the premium mid-size SUV segment. The Harrier is a strong proof point of our Turnaround 2.0 strategy and it will be a game-changer in the market. I am confident that with the Harrier, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business Unit will continue to win sustainably in the times to come.”

Mr. Mayank Pareek, President of Passenger Vehicle Business unit, said, “The all-new Harrier is our most premium offering yet and will attract aspiring buyers with its stunning design and exemplary performance”.

Acknowledging the trust and confidence that customers have shown in Harrier, those who have booked the vehicle prior to the launch will get a limited edition collector’s item- a scale model of the Harrier, at the time of the vehicle delivery.

The SOUL programme, an exclusive community of Tata SUV owners has also been strengthened with the launch of Harrier. Customers will be able to embark on iconic drives to unexplored destinations across India and international locations. The company has launched a rewards programme with which customers can accumulate SOUL points and redeem them for various gifts and souvenirs.

A contemporary expression of Tata Motors new Impact Design 2.0 language grabs the attention of the viewer. The strong proportions and expressive surfaces provide a true SUV stance, incredible road presence and a sense of dynamism. With contemporary SUV design proportions, Harrier flaunts a floating roof with bold chrome finisher, flared wheel arches, dual function LED DRLs accentuating its overall bold presence.

The interior design is clean, clutter-free and offers a blend of a great balance of style and practicality. The use of high quality material and colour combinations enhances the experience, lending a premium and luxurious feel to the interiors.

The SUV is available in four variants – XE, XM, XT, XZ and five exciting colour options – Calisto Copper, Thermisto Gold, Ariel Silver, Telesto Grey & Orcus White.

The Harrier is built on OMEGA Architecture developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover. Derived from Land Rover’s legendary D8 Platform, and optimised for Indian conditions with over 2.2 million km of testing on torturous terrains, the platform offers exemplary driving dynamics, absolute safety and a refined in-cabin experience.

The Harrier is packed with top-of-the-line safety features which lend greater confidence behind the wheel. An Advanced Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with 14 added functionalities ensures stability in difficult driving conditions. Six Airbags and Child Seat ISOFIX Anchor Points ensure uncompromising protection on every ride.

The vehicle is powered by the cutting-edge Kryotec 2.0 Diesel engine, which provides an optimal balance between power and fuel economy.

The front and rear suspensions on Harrier are specially tuned for Indian conditions delivering a refined ride with great handling.
