Maruti Suzuki’s 4th JIM at Sonipat commences admissions for the first batch

The Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) is a collaborative initiative between the Governments of Japan and India to develop skilled manufacturing talent in India. Launched under a 2016 agreement, the program aims to train 30,000 youth over 10 years, with over 2,100 students trained across three institutes so far.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commenced admissions for the inaugural batch at its newly established Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) located at Master Atul Govt. ITI in Sonipat, Haryana. Set to begin in September 2025, the first batch will train over 100 students across four key trades: Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Machinist, Welder, and Fitter. The company has invested ₹10 crore to set up the Sonipat JIM, reinforcing its commitment to skill development and advanced manufacturing training in India.

Affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and accredited by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, JIM Sonipat will follow a dual system of training that combines theoretical learning with practical on-the-job training. The program will follow NCVT curriculum. Additionally, it will include essential training in safety, quality, discipline, kaizen, and other acclaimed Japanese manufacturing practices relevant to the automobile manufacturing industry.

Elaborating on the initiative, Mr. Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki said,“We are committed to supporting the Government of India’s ‘Skill India Mission’ by training youth and making them industry ready. After setting up our first JIM in Haryana at Uncha Majra, we are thankful to the Government of Haryana for providing us the opportunity to set up the second JIM in the state. We are confident that both JIMs will prepare the students for opportunities across the automobile ecosystem and contribute to progress of Haryana.”

Mr. Bharti added, “By incorporating principles of safety, quality, and the acclaimed Japanese practices of discipline and continuous improvement, JIM Sonipat will not only enhance employability but also inculcate progressive work ethic among the students.”

As part of the Memorandum of Agreement to set up JIM Sonipat, the Government of Haryana has provided the land and building, while Maruti Suzuki has upgraded civil infrastructure, provided equipment, set up an assembly line for real-life simulation, designed training modules, and will manage the overall operations.

The Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) is a joint initiative by the Governments of Japan and India aimed at building a skilled manufacturing workforce in India. It was established under a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed in 2016 between Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). This partnership, under the ‘Manufacturing Skill Transfer Promotion Programme’, aims to train 30,000 Indian youth over a span of 10 years. Since its inception, more than 2,100 students have been trained across the three operational JIMs.
