Registration renewal doubled for 20+ year vehicles, unchanged for 15–20 years

Under the new rule, renewing registration will cost ₹2,000 for motorcycles and ₹10,000 for cars older than 20 years. However, charges for vehicles aged 15–20 years remain unchanged. The move is intended to discourage the use of vehicles manufactured before BS-II emission norms.

Keeping a vehicle over 20 years old will now be costlier, as the government has doubled the registration renewal fee. Under the new rule, renewing registration will cost ₹2,000 for motorcycles and ₹10,000 for cars older than 20 years. However, charges for vehicles aged 15–20 years remain unchanged. In its February draft notification, the road transport ministry had proposed higher renewal fees for commercial medium and heavy vehicles over 15 years old—₹12,000 and ₹18,000, respectively. It had also suggested doubling the renewal charges for those over 20 years old to ₹24,000 and ₹36,000. However, following opposition from transport organisations, this proposal has been put on hold, with a final decision to be taken later. The notification comes just a week after the Supreme Court temporarily barred authorities from acting against owners of petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi-NCR.
