Tata Motors continued its strong momentum in April 2026, emerging as India’s top electric passenger vehicle (PV) manufacturer while also retaining the No. 2 position in the overall PV market, according to VAHAN data.
In the EV segment, Tata Motors sold 8,507 units during the month, staying ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra (5,394 units) and MG Motor (4,978 units). In the broader PV market, Tata Motors recorded sales of 57,472 units, trailing market leader Maruti Suzuki (1,58,223 units) but outperforming M&M (54,897 units) and Hyundai Motor India (47,345 units).
Strong Year-to-Date Performance
For the January–April 2026 period, Tata Motors maintained its No. 2 ranking in the overall PV segment with cumulative sales of 2,47,308 units. This placed it ahead of M&M (2,40,301 units) and Hyundai (2,11,020 units), while Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the market with 7,08,551 units.
Tata Motors’ leadership in the EV space remained even more pronounced. The company sold 31,604 electric PVs during the first four months of the year, capturing nearly 40% of the market. MG Motor followed with 19,036 units, while M&M recorded 18,153 units.
April Sees Sequential Slowdown in PV Market
Despite strong year-to-date numbers, April proved to be a softer month for the overall PV industry. Total industry volumes declined 10.2% sequentially to 3,98,146 units from 4,43,201 units in March, as most major OEMs reported a drop after robust March sales.
Maruti Suzuki’s volumes fell 9.7% month-on-month, while Tata Motors and M&M saw sharper declines of 14.4% and 14.3%, respectively. Hyundai recorded a relatively smaller drop of 5.2%, with Toyota Kirloskar Motor down 7.6% and Kia India declining 13.4%.
Among smaller players, MG Motor fell 10.5% to 6,033 units, Honda Cars India declined 6.7% to 5,326 units, and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India slipped 3.2% to 8,862 units. Stellantis’s PCA operations dropped 7.6% to 719 units.
However, Renault India and Nissan Motor India bucked the trend, posting sequential growth of 12.2% and 17.1%, respectively. Fiat India also registered a 10.7% increase, albeit on a low base.
EV Segment Shows Resilience
The electric PV segment remained relatively stable compared to the broader market. EV sales stood at 22,677 units in April, a marginal 1.8% decline from March’s 23,097 units. This resilience pushed EV penetration to 5.7% of total PV sales, up from 5.2% in March.
Tata Motors’ EV sales dipped slightly by 2% month-on-month, while M&M declined 4.5%. MG Motor experienced a steeper 10.3% drop.
Meanwhile, emerging EV players showed strong momentum. VinFast surged 66.6% to 1,231 units, narrowly ahead of Maruti Suzuki’s 1,222 EV units. Maruti’s EV sales grew 22.3% sequentially, indicating rising traction. BYD posted a 4% increase to 467 units, while Hyundai’s EV volumes remained stable at 512 units. Kia, however, saw a sharp 28.5% decline.
Key Takeaways
April 2026 highlighted two key trends: a cooling in the overall passenger vehicle market after a strong March, and continued resilience in EV demand. For Tata Motors, maintaining EV leadership alongside its No. 2 PV position underscores a strong start to CY2026, even as competition intensifies from established players and new entrants alike.
