Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), the CSR arm of Hyundai Motor India Limited, has inaugurated a rejuvenated community pond in Thandalam village, located in the Kundrathur block of Kancheepuram district, reinforcing its long-term commitment to sustainable water management and climate resilience.
The project, completed with an investment of ₹1.73 crore under Hyundai’s H2OPE program, has increased the pond’s storage capacity to 21,840 cubic meters. This enhancement is expected to significantly boost groundwater recharge potential while improving water availability for the local community.
The rejuvenation work involved scientific desilting, strengthening of bunds, stone pitching, revetment construction, installation of a protective compound wall, LED lighting, and the development of a community-friendly walking pathway. Beyond infrastructure restoration, the initiative also aims to revive the ecological and social value of the waterbody, transforming it into a sustainable and accessible community space.
By improving rainwater harvesting and recharge capacity, the project supports:
- Stabilisation of groundwater levels
- Improved water availability for domestic and agricultural use
- Enhanced climate resilience in water stressed periods
- Safer and more accessible community spaces
The restored pond is expected to benefit over 1,500 residents, contributing to long-term water security and environmental sustainability in the region.
The facility was formally handed over to the village panchayat in the presence of Thiru. T. M. Anbarasan, Honorable Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, District Collector Tmt. D Sneha IAS, panchayat leaders, villagers, and Thiru. Gopalakrishnan C.S., Trustee, Hyundai Motor India Foundation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Gopalakrishnan C.S., Whole-time director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, HMIL and Trustee, HMIF, said, Water Security is fundamental to community resilience. Through our INR 1.73 crore investment under H2OPE initiative, we aim not to just restore waterbodies, but to strengthen livelihoods, recharge groundwater and enhance environmental sustainability. Hyundai’s global vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ guides every step we take towards sustainable community development.
HMIF’s H2OPE program has revitalized multiple community waterbodies in the region such as Sriperumbudur, Paraniputhur and Irrungattukottai, contributing to improved groundwater recharge, ecological restoration, and long-term sustainability.
