SATRAC Engineering Private Limited has inaugurated a new trailer and truck body manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, strengthening its production footprint in South India. Spread across 15 acres, the plant features 3.5 acres of covered production space and is designed to manufacture more than 800 units per month.
With the addition of the new facility, SATRAC’s combined output capacity across its Chennai and Bengaluru plants is expected to exceed 1,500 units per month during peak production cycles.
The plant incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies, including plasma and laser cutting machines sourced from Germany, press brake equipment from Canada, automated shot blasting and painting systems, and robotic welding lines aimed at improving structural precision while reducing production time.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Torsten Schmidt, Managing Director and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV). Schmidt highlighted SATRAC’s long-standing association with DICV as a supplier of tipper bodies for the BharatBenz product range. He added that the facility’s proximity to DICV’s manufacturing operations in Sriperumbudur offers logistical advantages and supports the company’s localisation goals under the Make in India initiative.
MC Bantwal, Managing Director of SATRAC, said the company plans to expand further with three additional manufacturing plants planned in Jamshedpur, Pune, and Gujarat, with each new facility expected to come online approximately 30 months apart.
Founded in 1994, SATRAC manufactures trailers, tippers, truck bodies, tankers, bulkers, special-purpose vehicles, and defence mobility solutions. The company employs over 1,000 personnel, including more than 100 automotive and mechanical engineers, supported by a nationwide service workforce of 170 professionals.
SATRAC is backed by Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. of Japan, a company with more than seven decades of experience in special-purpose vehicles and infrastructure equipment. Kyokuto operates manufacturing facilities across Asia-Pacific markets and exports products to over 150 countries worldwide.
The company positions its offerings around lightweight construction, fuel efficiency, and improved total cost of ownership, while also focusing on stronger resale value for fleet operators. Bantwal noted that India’s trailer and truck body segment has traditionally been dominated by unorganised players, with SATRAC targeting growth in the organised, process-driven manufacturing space.
