Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and its vehicle partner Ashok Leyland on February 6 unveiled India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) technology solution for heavy-duty trucks at the India Energy Week in Bengaluru, which was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to Reliance, it is a “unique and affordable”, indigenously developed technology solution that could redefine the future of green mobility. RIL and its vehicle partner Ashok Leyland, along with a few other partners, together developed the technology under its Net carbon Zero vision. The first engines run with this tech was tested in early 2022.
Emission levels of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered trucks are near zero, the release said. It can deliver “performance on par with conventional diesel trucks and reduce noise and with projected reductions in operating costs thus redefining the future of Green Mobility,” it added.
As per the company, going forward, Reliance will first extensively test and validate the H2-ICE technology for heavy-duty trucks before its first commercial deployment at scale initially across its captive fleet. The company is also simultaneously pursuing the opportunity to create an end-to-end Hydrogen eco system for mobility, it said.
