Renault revives iconic Duster SUV in India with Hybrid and Turbo Power

Renault has officially brought back the iconic Duster to India, marking a critical step in its comeback strategy under the International Game Plan 2027.

After a four-year hiatus, Renault has reintroduced the Duster mid-size SUV in India, aiming to rebuild its presence in the world’s fastest-growing automobile market. The third-generation Duster marks the first India-bound launch under Renault’s International Game Plan 2027, a strategy central to the French automaker’s revival efforts in the country.

The new Duster was unveiled on Monday in Chennai. Originally launched in 2012, the Duster played a pivotal role in popularising the SUV segment in India, alongside the Ford EcoSport. Its early success helped Renault achieve its highest-ever market share of around 4% in 2016. However, the model was discontinued in early 2022 due to stricter emission norms.

“Duster did not just compete in a segment, it created one. Now, Duster is back, Renault is back,” said Stephane Deblaise, CEO of Renault India, at the launch of the third-generation model. Fabrice Cambolive, Chief Growth Officer of the Renault Group, added, “With the launch of Duster, we are entering a new phase of acceleration in India. India is a key pillar for our growth outside Europe.”

The new Duster is built on the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP), which is 90% India-specific and is claimed to offer best-in-class ride and handling. Powertrain options include a new turbocharged GDi engine—Turbo TCe160—delivering 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed wet-clutch EDC gearbox, along with a strong hybrid option.

According to V. Vikraman, Chief of Engineering at Renault India, the Duster has been engineered for endurance and long-term durability, with a focus on Indian driving conditions.

The competitive landscape, however, has evolved significantly since the Duster’s initial success. While SUVs accounted for only a low double-digit share of passenger vehicle sales a decade ago, they now represent over half of all cars sold in India. The mid-size SUV segment is currently dominated by Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and Kia, all of which offer feature-rich portfolios with multiple powertrain options.

Renault was once viewed as a disruptor, first with the Duster in 2011 and later with the Kwid in 2015. The automaker’s India volumes peaked in FY2016–17 at 135,123 units, translating into nearly 4% market share. However, the absence of new competitive products, limited production expansion and the impact of the pandemic led to a prolonged slowdown. In FY2025, Renault’s India sales declined to 37,900 units, with market share shrinking to about 1%.

With the relaunch of the Duster, Renault’s India portfolio now includes four models—the Kwid, Kiger, Triber and Duster. Renault India Managing Director Venkat said the company is targeting double-digit growth and a recovery to a 3% market share by FY2027 through a full lineup refresh.

“The re-entry of the Duster is a pivotal launch for Renault,” said Gaurav Vangal, Associate Director, Light Vehicle Production Forecast at S&P Global. “In today’s SUV-heavy market, success will depend not just on sales execution and customer experience, but also on powertrain strategy. A decade ago, the K9K diesel defined the Duster’s appeal—this time, Renault must deliver equally compelling options to sustain momentum.”

Globally, Renault’s International Game Plan 2027 focuses on strengthening markets outside Europe, backed by a €3 billion investment to launch eight new models, including five in the higher-value C and D segments. The company also plans to accelerate electrification, targeting electric or hybrid vehicles to account for one-third of its sales outside Europe by the end of the decade, while doubling net revenue per vehicle by 2027 compared with 2019 levels.

In India, Renault is also planning a three-row SUV following the refresh of its existing lineup. With upcoming launches, the automaker aims to cover segments ranging from A to D. India is expected to play a key role in Renault’s product transformation and electrification strategy, supported by the introduction of the CMF-B modular platform for future B- and C-segment models catering to both domestic and export markets. In the longer term, Renault may also evaluate the Brazil-developed CMF-C platform for India.
