Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. launched the updated Tata Punch in Mumbai, introducing new turbocharged petrol and twin-cylinder iCNG powertrain options, with prices starting at ₹5.59 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
The refreshed sub-compact SUV, which has been trusted by nearly 700,000 customers since its debut in October 2021, builds on its strong safety credentials while adding advanced powertrain technologies. The Punch continues to carry a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, reinforcing its positioning as one of the safest vehicles in its segment.
At the heart of the update is the new 1.2-litre iTurbo Revotron petrol engine, which Tata Motors claims delivers a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. The Punch also becomes the first SUV in its segment to offer twin-cylinder iCNG technology paired with an AMT gearbox, combining fuel efficiency with enhanced driving convenience.
Commenting on the launch, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., said the Punch has consistently reflected India’s evolving aspirations by democratizing the SUV experience through a feature-rich and safety-led offering, helping it emerge as one of the country’s best-selling SUVs.
The new Punch is available across eight variants—Smart, Pure, Pure+, Pure+ S, Adventure, Adventure S, Accomplished, and Accomplished+ S—with prices ranging from ₹5.59 lakh to ₹10.54 lakh. Customers can choose from multiple powertrain options, including Revotron petrol with manual and AMT, iCNG with manual and AMT, and iTurbo petrol with manual transmission.
In terms of features, the SUV offers a 26.03 cm HD infotainment system, 360-degree HD surround-view camera, auto-dimming IRVM, and a 65W front Type-C USB charger. Safety remains a key highlight, with six airbags as standard, electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold and hill descent control, rain-sensing wipers, and a high-strength ALFA-ARC architecture.
Design updates include a new 3D front grille, LED headlamps, connected LED tail lamps, executive lounge seats with extended thigh support, and a flat rear floor for improved rear-seat comfort. The twin-cylinder iCNG layout preserves usable boot space while retaining standard equipment.
The updated Punch continues to offer over 95 active and passive safety features, maintaining its 5-star Bharat NCAP rating carried over from the previous model.
Since its launch in October 2021 at a starting price of ₹5.49 lakh, the Tata Punch identified a clear gap in the market—an affordable SUV offering that could challenge premium hatchbacks with SUV-like stance and safety. The strategy paid off rapidly.
The Punch became the fastest SUV in India to cross 100,000 sales in just 10 months, followed by 150,000 units in 15 months, 200,000 units in 20 months, and 400,000 units in 32 months. By January 2025, Tata Motors celebrated the 500,000-unit milestone, and within the same year, production crossed 600,000 units, a feat achieved in under four years.
The model reached its peak in calendar year 2024, when it emerged as India’s best-selling passenger vehicle, ending decades-long dominance by Maruti Suzuki. With over 202,000 units sold, the Punch outperformed models such as the Wagon R, Ertiga and even Tata’s own Nexon.
However, momentum softened in 2025. During the first half of the year, the Punch slipped to 10th position in monthly sales rankings, registering a 23% year-on-year decline. Average monthly volumes fell sharply from over 16,000 units recorded in the first half of FY2025.
The slowdown reflects multiple factors, including intensifying competition from new entrants such as the Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros, shifting consumer preference toward larger SUVs like the Nexon and Creta, and a broader market trend away from smaller vehicles. Additionally, prolonged anticipation of a facelift weighed on demand for the outgoing model, which had seen limited updates since launch.
With the introduction of new powertrains, enhanced features and refreshed styling, Tata Motors is now looking to reignite demand for the Punch and strengthen its position in India’s highly competitive compact SUV market.
