Montra Electric’s Rhino, India’s first 55-ton GCW EV Truck, surpasses 1.2 crore kilometres

Within two years of launch, India’s first 55-ton GCW electric truck enabled electric heavy-duty freight operations to reduce over 3.79 million tons of CO₂ emissions, demonstrating the large-scale viability of clean heavy-duty transport.

Montra Electric M&HCV has achieved a major milestone as its flagship heavy-duty electric truck, the Rhino 5538EV, has covered over 1.2 crore kilometres on Indian roads within just two years of launch. Operating with a fleet of 350 trucks, the Rhino has demonstrated exceptional reliability in steel, cement, and port logistics sectors while reducing more than 3.79 million tons of CO₂ emissions.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Jalaj Gupta, Managing Director of Montra Electric (TI Clean Mobility), said, “This milestone strongly validates India’s shift towards clean mobility. With the Rhino 5538EV, we are proving that electric heavy transport is not a distant dream but a present reality on Indian roads. It underscores our commitment to purposeful innovation and accelerating sustainable, cost-effective logistics.”

With a steadily expanding fleet, the Rhino heavy duty EV trucks have delivered large-scale impact across critical sectors such as steel, cement, and port logistics, bringing real value to customers. Leading cement and steel companies have adopted these EV trucks as early movers and placed repeat orders over the past two years.

The Rhino 5538EV currently records an uptime of over 98%, demonstrating consistent reliability in high-demand industrial environments. Along with lowering operating costs through fuel and maintenance savings, the trucks are helping companies accelerate their decarbonization goals. Dedicated 24×7 on-site service support further ensures high uptime and productivity.

Covering more than 1.2 crore kilometres in just two years, Montra Electric’s M&HCV fleet has reduced an estimated 3.79 million tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 181 million trees. This represents a significant environmental achievement and a strong step toward cleaner freight transport.

The Rhino EV range spans heavy commercial vehicles starting with the 6×4 tractor trailer. It will soon include a 4×2 tractor trailer and a 6×4 configuration tipper. Developed by Montra Electric (TI Clean Mobility), the Murugappa Group’s EV venture, Rhino is powered by a 282 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery and a best-in-class PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor). Together, they deliver 280 kW (380 hp) of power and 2000 Nm of torque. The truck supports fast charging up to 240 kW, enabling a 20–100% charge in just 60 minutes, with a certified range of 169* km under standard test conditions.

Designed with driver comfort at its core, Rhino trucks feature Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) for a clutchless driving experience, low NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), smooth power delivery, and confident handling in both loaded and empty conditions. Drivers have consistently shared positive feedback, citing Rhino as a pleasure to drive.

Built on a strong and rugged driveline, Rhino comes with a strong chassis frame and proven aggregates including heavy-duty bogie suspension, Meritor axles, and Wabco air brakes. Its muscular cabin and stylish decals also give Rhino a commanding presence on Indian roads.
