Volvo Buses India, a business unit of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), has unveiled the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper, India’s first original equipment (OE)-built seater-sleeper coach from the brand. The new premium coach made its debut at PRAWAAS 5.0 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, further expanding Volvo’s premium intercity coach portfolio in the country.
Designed with passenger comfort at its core, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper combines conventional seating and sleeper berths on a single platform, making it suitable for both short- and long-distance travel. The versatile configuration allows fleet operators to cater to varying passenger preferences while maximizing operational flexibility across different routes.
Volvo Buses India says the new coach has been developed to deliver the premium travel experience that customers have come to associate with the Volvo brand over the past two decades. By offering a combination of comfort, convenience and operational efficiency, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper aims to meet the evolving needs of India’s growing intercity bus travel market while strengthening the company’s position in the premium coach segment.
The launch comes at a time when India’s long-distance passenger transport sector is evolving rapidly, driven by rising expectations for comfort, safety, and luxury travel. The 15-metre Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper is powered by Volvo’s fuel-efficient VEDX8 engine and features 21 upper-deck sleeper berths, 27 premium lower-deck seats with calf support, and three rear sleeper berths, accommodating a total of 51 passengers. With I shift transmission and 6 cu.m of luggage space, the coach is engineered for demanding long-distance operations, helping operators maximize productivity without compromising passenger comfort.
Designed around the passenger, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper introduces refreshed interiors, enhanced mood lighting, premium berth and seating arrangements, integrated entertainment provisions, mobile charging points, privacy features, and a calm cabin environment, collectively delivering one of the most comfortable travel experiences in its segment.The Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper coach also features thoughtfully designed passenger spaces, including a fully integrated kitchenette and an onboard toilet, enabling greater convenience and comfort during long-distance journeys
In an industry first, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper introduces a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and active safety technologies. Among the highlights is a 360-degree Camera System, providing drivers with a complete surround view of the vehicle. The coach is also equipped with Electronic Mirrors (Camera Monitor System) that replace traditional rear-view mirrors. The system delivers enhanced visibility in adverse weather and lighting conditions while reducing blind spots and improving driver awareness around the vehicle.
Further strengthening safety, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper features a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), continuously monitoring tyre health to improve vehicle reliability, safety and fuel efficiency. A Driver State Monitoring System enhances driver awareness by detecting signs of fatigue, distraction and critical driving situations, enabling timely alerts and proactive intervention to support safer operations. To reinforce responsible driving practices, the coach is fitted with an Alcohol Interlock System, preventing vehicle operation if alcohol is detected, thereby adding an additional layer of protection for passengers and operators.
The new coach also comes with a Telematics solution, offering operators real-time access to critical vehicle information including location, speed, fuel consumption, vehicle performance and operational alerts. The connected solution supports improved fleet management and data-driven decision-making for operators.
