India auto retail sets historic record in July 2026: FADA

India's automobile retail industry created history in July 2026 as every vehicle segment recorded its highest-ever July registrations. Overall retail sales rose 25.89% year-on-year, while electric vehicle registrations reached an all-time high, according to FADA.

India’s automobile retail market achieved a historic milestone in July 2026, with all six vehicle categories registering their highest-ever July sales, according to the latest retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Overall vehicle registrations reached 25,91,138 units, marking a 25.89% year-on-year (YoY) increase, while remaining almost flat compared to June with a marginal 0.16% month-on-month (MoM) decline.

The record-breaking performance was driven by broad-based demand across segments, improving affordability following GST reforms, stronger rural demand, expanding electric vehicle adoption and favourable festive season timing.

Every Vehicle Category Posts Record July Performance

Two-wheelers led the market with 18,18,289 registrations, up 28.25% YoY, becoming the first time the segment crossed the 18-lakh mark in July.

Passenger vehicle registrations reached 4,16,555 units, rising 19.13% YoY and crossing the four-lakh milestone for the first time in the month of July.

Commercial vehicles recorded 99,666 units, growing 24.04% YoY, while three-wheeler sales increased 16.16% to 1,33,778 units.

The agricultural sector also contributed significantly, with tractor registrations climbing 28.10% to 1,17,349 units, while wheeled construction equipment registered the strongest growth among all categories, surging 46.07% to 5,501 units.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles Narrow the Gap with Petrol

One of the most significant trends during July was the rapid shift towards alternative fuel passenger vehicles.

Vehicles powered by CNG, hybrid and electric powertrains together accounted for 40.59% of passenger vehicle registrations, compared to 41.68% for petrol-powered models. The gap between the two has narrowed dramatically from 13.21 percentage points a year ago to just 1.09 percentage points, indicating a major transformation in consumer buying preferences.

Within the two-wheeler segment, electric vehicle penetration reached a record 11.24%, reflecting growing acceptance of electric mobility.

EV Retail Sales Reach All-Time High

Electric vehicle adoption continued to accelerate across categories.

Total EV registrations touched an all-time high of 3,27,901 units, pushing overall EV penetration to approximately 12.7%, compared to 9.6% in July 2025.

Both the two-wheeler EV and commercial vehicle EV segments recorded their highest-ever monthly retail volumes, highlighting increasing consumer confidence in electric mobility.

Strong Growth Despite Monsoon Challenges

Although July is traditionally considered a seasonally weaker month due to heavy monsoon activity, the industry delivered one of its strongest performances on record.

According to FADA, July 2026 became the 12th-highest retail month since January 2014, despite erratic rainfall, flooding in several regions and the impact of the Aadi and Shravan periods in southern India.

The growth was supported by improved affordability after GST reforms, easier access to vehicle financing, recovering rural demand and favourable festival timing compared to a relatively weak July 2025.

Rural Markets Continue to Outperform

Rural India emerged as the growth engine across all vehicle segments.

Passenger vehicle sales in rural markets increased 24.72% YoY, significantly ahead of urban growth of 15.76%.

Commercial vehicle retail also witnessed stronger rural momentum, with rural sales rising 29.37% YoY, compared to 19.36% in urban markets.

Tractor demand remained robust as improved monsoon conditions supported Kharif sowing activity, while infrastructure and logistics projects continued to boost demand for commercial vehicles and construction equipment.

Passenger Vehicle Inventory Remains Elevated

Despite healthy retail demand, FADA expressed concern over increasing passenger vehicle inventory.

Inventory levels rose to 33–35 days, exceeding the association’s recommended benchmark of 21 days.

With manufacturers beginning festive season stock build-up, FADA urged OEMs to align wholesale dispatches more closely with actual retail demand to prevent dealer inventories from rising further and tying up working capital.

Dealers Optimistic for August

Dealer confidence strengthened significantly heading into August.

According to FADA’s survey:

74.30% of dealers expect vehicle sales to grow.

22.90% anticipate stable demand.

Only 2.80% expect sales to decline.

Upcoming festive occasions such as Independence Day, Onam and Raksha Bandhan, along with improved rural cash flows and a favourable year-ago comparison, are expected to support continued momentum.

Festive Season Outlook Remains Strong

Looking at the August-October period, dealer optimism has reached its highest level in recent survey history.

Nearly 87.85% of dealers expect business growth over the next three months, supported by festive demand, steady interest rates, improving rural incomes and accelerating electric vehicle adoption.

However, FADA cautioned that risks remain, including weaker-than-expected festive demand, volatility in crude oil prices and foreign exchange, elevated passenger vehicle inventory and uncertainty surrounding the E20 fuel transition.

Commenting on the performance, Sai Giridhar, Vice President of FADA, described July 2026 as a landmark month for India’s automotive retail industry.

He noted that achieving record July sales across every vehicle category reflects the structural strength of India’s automobile market rather than temporary demand shifts. He also highlighted the rapidly changing passenger vehicle fuel mix, with alternative fuels now approaching parity with petrol, alongside record electric vehicle adoption.

With overall vehicle retail sales during the first four months of FY27 already 18.27% higher than the previous year, FADA believes the industry enters the festive season on a strong footing, supported by improving affordability, favourable financing conditions, stronger rural demand and continued momentum in vehicle electrification.
