
India’s automobile industry delivered a mixed performance in April 2025, as per data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). While the passenger vehicle (PV) segment posted modest growth, the three-wheeler category remained subdued, and the two-wheeler segment saw a significant decline.
The PV segment registered a year-on-year growth of 3.9%, reaching an all-time high for April with sales of 3.49 lakh units.
In contrast, the two-wheeler segment experienced a sharp decline of 16.7%, with sales falling to 14,58,784 units compared to 17,51,393 units in April 2024. Within this category, scooter sales dropped 5.7% to 5,48,370 units, while motorcycle sales plummeted 22.7% to 8,71,666 units during the same period.
Commenting on April-2025 performance, Mr Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM said, “Passenger Vehicles segment posted its highest ever sales of April in 2025 of 3.49 Lakh units, with a growth of 3.9% as compared to April 2024. Three-Wheelers de-grew marginally by (-) 0.7% compared to April of previous year, with sales of 0.49 Lakh units. The Two-Wheeler segment de-grew by (-) 16.7% in April 2025, as compared to April 2024, with sales of 14.59 Lakh units, due to high base effect of April last year, while it is likely to pick up in coming months. Auto industry smoothly transitioned to the new regulatory regime of 2nd stage of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) 2 regulation for Two and Three Wheelers from April 2025 onwards, in addition to rolling out E-20 compliant gasoline vehicles across the country from this month.”
The three-wheeler segment reported a muted decline of 0.7 per cent as its total sales accounted for 49,441 units last month, when compared to 49,774 units in the same month of 2024. The passenger carrier reported a growth of 2 per cent with 39,383 units, while the goods carrier declined by 7.7 per cent to 8,818 units in April.
