Mercedes-Benz Vitoria plant ushers in a new era with successful start of pre-series production for the All-Electric VLE

The VLE, the first vehicle built on Mercedes-Benz’s new modular and scalable van architecture, has successfully passed key development milestones. It demonstrated exceptional efficiency, sedan-like handling, and aerodynamic excellence. The VLE showcased impressive range with minimal charging stops on a long trip from Stuttgart to Rome, strong agility and speed on the Nardò test track, and reliable performance in extreme cold weather near the Arctic Circle. The VLE is set to make its world premiere in the first half of 2026.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria has commenced pre-series production of the new all-electric VLE, marking a key milestone ahead of the planned start of series production in 2026. Rigorous production testing during this ramp-up phase ensures the highest quality standards that customers expect from the brand with the star.

To support the production of the VLE—the first vehicle built on Mercedes-Benz’s newly developed, modular, and scalable van architecture—the Vitoria plant has undergone comprehensive modernization.

Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, stated: “The new VLE represents the debut of our modular and highly flexible van architecture. We have moved from initial concept to production readiness in record time. Throughout development, we leveraged innovative digital methods to drive significant efficiencies. Our employees, working in cross-functional and cross-border teams, have set new benchmarks in this process. We look forward to unveiling the VLE in the first half of 2026.”

In more than 160 different training offers, the about 5,000 employees at the location were trained on new processes and procedures, also in cooperation with other Mercedes‑Benz plants. Topics included, for example, the integration of new IT standards as well as the use of new technologies and materials.

Starting in 2026, the Mercedes-Benz Vitoria plant will flexibly produce the all-electric VLE alongside the V-Class, Vito, and eVito, integrating electric and combustion engine models on the same assembly line. The plant has been extensively modernized with new body shop and paint shop facilities, emphasizing digital, efficient, and sustainable production processes. Vitoria leads in net carbon-neutral van manufacturing, utilizing renewable energy, photovoltaic systems, geothermal heating, and waste heat recovery. Advanced technologies like AI, digital twins, and the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) will be introduced with the VLE. Bernd Krottmayer, Head of the plant, highlighted the team’s swift and flexible preparation, marking a new era for Mercedes-Benz Vans production.

The fully electric VLE perfectly blends the best of both worlds—offering limousine-like driving comfort alongside the versatility of an MPV. Mercedes-Benz places the highest priority on delivering customer value, and the VLE is designed to meet this with exceptional design, flexibility, and everyday practicality. Featuring seating for up to eight passengers, the VLE lineup caters to a wide range of needs—from adaptable vehicles for families and active lifestyles to premium shuttles—providing versatile and highly flexible space for every situation.
