Toyota Motor Corporation has announced the launch of the new RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in Japan, scheduled to go on sale from March 9, 2026. Built around the concept of “Life is an Adventure,” the sixth-generation RAV4 has been reimagined as a versatile SUV designed to support diverse customer lifestyles while retaining the model’s signature rugged design and practical packaging.
The hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) version, introduced in December 2025, has already received a strong response from customers, and the addition of the PHEV variant further strengthens the lineup by combining off-road capability with enhanced electrification.
Enhanced Electrification and Outdoor Utility
The new RAV4 PHEV expands the SUV’s go-anywhere capability by integrating strong off-road performance with a high-capacity onboard power supply system, allowing users to access significant electrical output even during outdoor activities.
Built on Toyota’s energy-efficient hybrid platform, the plug-in hybrid system features a large-capacity drive battery and compatibility with high-output charging infrastructure. This setup significantly improves battery electric vehicle (BEV) mode driving range and performance, delivering powerful acceleration while supporting lower environmental impact.
New GR SPORT Variant Joins Lineup
Toyota has also introduced a new GR SPORT grade, designed to offer a sportier appearance along with enhanced handling characteristics. The variant combines the dynamic performance benefits of a PHEV system with improved manoeuvrability and styling inspired by Toyota’s motorsport philosophy.
With this addition, the sixth-generation RAV4 lineup now includes:
Z grade (PHEV and HEV)
Adventure grade (HEV)
GR SPORT grade (PHEV)
Multi-Pathway Strategy Toward Carbon Neutrality
Plug-in hybrid vehicles continue to play a key role in Toyota’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality. The company remains committed to its multi-pathway approach, offering customers a range of electrified powertrain options globally under its “to you” brand philosophy, which focuses on delivering vehicles tailored to individual needs.
Pricing and Powertrain Details
The RAV4 PHEV is powered by a 2.5-litre series-parallel plug-in hybrid system (A25A-FXS) paired with Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel-drive system and an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT).
Manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing in Japan is as follows:
Z Grade (PHEV): ¥6,000,000 (including consumption tax)
GR SPORT (PHEV): ¥6,300,000 (including consumption tax)
Separate pricing applies in Okinawa. Prices include consumption tax but exclude recycling fees.
