Toyota launches Sixth-Gen RAV4 in Japan with new variants and advanced tech

Toyota has launched the all-new sixth-generation RAV4 in Japan, built around the theme “Life is an Adventure.” Retaining its bold design, the SUV introduces a strong focus on diversification, electrification and intelligence, with three variants on offer—Z, Adventure and the performance-oriented GR SPORT, set to arrive by FY2025.

Toyota Motor Corporation has officially launched the all-new sixth-generation RAV4 in Japan on December 17, 2025. Developed around the philosophy “Life is an Adventure,” the latest RAV4 embodies a true go-anywhere, do-anything spirit, reinforcing its position as a versatile and capable SUV.

While retaining the RAV4’s hallmark robust and powerful design, the new model has been reimagined with a strong focus on Diversification, Electrification, and Intelligence. As part of its diversification strategy, Toyota is offering three distinct variants: the refined and sophisticated Z, the rugged Adventure model designed for off-road capability, and the performance-oriented GR SPORT, scheduled for launch within FY2025 (ending March 2026).

Under Electrification, the lineup includes both a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and a newly developed plug-in hybrid system (PHEV, scheduled for release within fiscal 2025), delivering the seamless acceleration and powerful performance unique to electrified vehicles.

Under Intelligence, leveraging the software development platform Arene for the first time has shortened the development period for crucial UI software such as the advanced safety and security package Toyota Safety Sense and the cockpit systems, enabling these features to be installed more quickly into the vehicle. This allows us to provide a safer, more secure, and more comfortable mobility experience to customers.

Moving forward, we aim for further evolution, including enabling simultaneous updates of multiple functions.

The RAV4 was born in 1994 as a pioneer of a new SUV genre, designed to be enjoyable for both outdoor adventures and city driving, at a time when SUVs were primarily considered off-road vehicles. Over its nearly 30-year history, it has been loved by many customers worldwide by adapting to diverse lifestyles in tune with the times. With this latest evolution, the RAV4 will continue to be a beloved SUV around the world, staying closely attuned to each customer’s lifestyle.
