India’s Electric Passenger Vehicle retail sales rise 44% in February; Tata Motors maintains lead: FADA

Electric passenger vehicle retail sales in India increased 44 percent year-on-year in February 2026, led by Tata Motors, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.

Electric passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales in India recorded strong year-on-year growth in February 2026, rising 44% to 13,733 units, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). However, sales declined 25.65% month-on-month from 18,470 units sold in January 2026, reflecting the typical post-January slowdown in retail demand.

Among manufacturers, Tata Motors retained its leadership position in the electric PV segment with retail sales of 5,568 units in February 2026, marking a 38.51% increase from 4,020 units in the same month last year. On a sequential basis, however, the company’s sales dropped 30.46% from 8,007 units recorded in January.

JSW MG Motor India secured the second position with retail sales of 3,312 units. The figure represented a 5.10% year-on-year decline and a 29.58% drop compared with January’s sales.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported the strongest annual growth among major players, with electric PV retail sales surging to 2,913 units compared with 508 units in February 2025—an increase of 473.43%. On a month-on-month basis, the company’s sales declined 20.58% from 3,668 units in January.

Commenting on the trend, C. S. Vigneshwar, President of FADA, said EV retail sales in February 2026 continued to grow year-on-year across categories. However, overall EV penetration remained relatively stable due to faster growth in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle volumes. He noted that the month-on-month softness seen in some EV categories was largely due to the shorter month and the high sales base recorded in January.

Among other manufacturers, VinFast recorded retail sales of 384 units in February, while BYD reported 306 units, reflecting a 10.07% year-on-year increase and a 32.47% rise compared with January.

Hyundai Motor India sold 304 electric vehicles during the month, representing a sharp 60.77% decline from 775 units in February 2025. Meanwhile, Kia India posted strong annual growth with sales of 295 units, compared with just 22 units in the same period last year.

In the luxury EV segment, BMW India sold 245 units, while Mercedes-Benz India recorded retail sales of 65 units in February.

Other manufacturers included Maruti Suzuki India Limited with 214 units, Tesla India Motors and Energy with 29 units, and Volvo Auto India with 25 units.
