Reinforcing its commitment to community development and sustainable social impact, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has launched a new initiative to improve access to safe and hygienic drinking water in rural Karnataka. The company conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for the installation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water purification units in Tumakuru district, aimed at enhancing public health and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
The ceremony was graced by Shri V. Somanna, Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Government of India, along with Mr. Ramesh Rao, Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and other senior company representatives.
Access to clean drinking water continues to be a significant challenge for several rural communities across Karnataka. Through this initiative, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will install 500 litres-per-hour (LPH) RO water purification units across six villages—Beligere, Kamberahatti, Hosahatti, Mudlapalya, Junjappanahatti, and Somalapura—helping ensure a reliable supply of safe drinking water for local residents.
The project is expected to directly benefit approximately 9,200 people every year across 29 villages, improving access to purified drinking water while contributing to better health, sanitation, and overall quality of life. By providing dependable drinking water infrastructure closer to communities, the initiative also aims to reduce the burden of water collection and strengthen long-term public health outcomes.
Shri. V. Somanna Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, Government of India said, “Development becomes meaningful when it improves the everyday lives of people. Access to clean drinking water is not merely an infrastructure requirement but a necessity that impacts health, education and the well-being of entire communities. This initiative by Toyota Kirloskar Motor will benefit thousands of residents across villages in Tumakuru and create long-term value for the region. I commend the company for its commitment to community development and its efforts towards supporting the aspirations of rural India.”
Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “Clean drinking water should never be a privilege; it is a basic necessity that every family deserves. We have seen how access to safe water can positively influence the health and everyday lives of entire communities. The RO units being established in Tumakuru are intended to create lasting value for the villages they serve and support the well-being of future generations. At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we remain committed to undertaking initiatives that address real community needs and make a meaningful difference where it matters most.”
The Tumakuru initiative further strengthens Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s efforts to create meaningful social impact beyond its business operations. With 51 water purification units already established across India (benefiting over 3.5 lakh people in 312 villages), the company continues to invest in community infrastructure that addresses essential needs and improves quality of life. Through such initiatives, TKM remains focused on supporting inclusive and sustainable development in the communities it serves.
