Tata Group seeks approval for $1 billion shipbuilding project in Kerala

Tata Group has proposed a $1 billion (₹100 billion) shipbuilding project in Kerala, marking its potential entry into the shipbuilding sector. The investment aligns with India's push to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capabilities and follows growing investments in Kerala's expanding maritime ecosystem.

Tata Group has sought approval from the Kerala government for a $1 billion (₹100 billion) investment to establish a shipbuilding project in the state, marking a potential entry into the shipbuilding sector. The proposal is currently under consideration, with the state government expected to take a decision within the next month.

According to Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, the government views the proposal favourably and is prepared to allocate land for the project if it receives approval. The investment would diversify Tata Group’s portfolio beyond its existing businesses in steel, automobiles, consumer products, electronics and other sectors.

The proposal comes as Kerala continues to strengthen its position as a maritime hub. The state’s growing maritime infrastructure has attracted significant investments, including MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s commitment of $1.4 billion to expand operations at Adani Group’s Vizhinjam deepwater transhipment port.

The development also aligns with India’s broader efforts to enhance domestic shipbuilding capabilities through international collaboration. On July 4, 2025, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India’s largest state-owned shipbuilder.

The partnership covers ship design support, procurement assistance, technology collaboration to improve productivity and global quality standards, workforce training, and joint exploration of shipbuilding opportunities in India and overseas markets. It supports the Government of India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, both of which aim to position India among the world’s leading shipbuilding nations.
