Ford Fathom EV Pickup unveiled at $28,000

New midsize EV pickup debuts on Ford's next-generation affordable EV platform, with pre-orders opening in 2027.

Ford Motor has unveiled its new midsize electric pickup truck, the Fathom, with a starting price of approximately $28,000, making it one of the most affordable electric pickups in the market. The announcement marks a significant shift in Ford’s electric vehicle strategy, as the company focuses on delivering cost-effective EVs to a broader customer base.

Built on a New Affordable EV Platform

Developed from the ground up by a dedicated engineering team based in California, the Fathom is designed to compete with rivals such as Tesla and Chinese EV giant BYD. The pickup will be the first model built on Ford’s next-generation affordable EV platform, which is expected to underpin a family of future electric vehicles.

Innovative Manufacturing Process

To support cost-efficient production, Ford has introduced a new assembly process at its Louisville Assembly Plant. Instead of relying on a traditional single conveyor belt, the company has created three parallel assembly lines for the front section, rear section, and structural battery with seating. These lines converge at the final stage of production, improving manufacturing efficiency while reducing production costs.

A Strategic Shift Toward Affordable EVs

The launch of the Fathom follows Ford’s decision to overhaul its electric vehicle strategy after recording a $19.5 billion writedown last year. As part of the restructuring, the automaker cancelled several planned EV models, including its larger and more expensive Lightning electric pickup, and redirected its investments toward more affordable electric vehicles.

Among the Most Affordable Ford Models

With a starting price below $30,000, the Fathom joins a select group of vehicles in the U.S. market that remain within this price bracket. According to data from Edmunds, only 36 vehicle models—including gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles—were available with a starting price below $30,000 as of May 2026.

The new electric pickup will also become one of Ford’s most affordable offerings, competing closely with the Ford Maverick, which currently starts just under the $30,000 mark.

Launch Timeline

Ford plans to begin accepting pre-orders for the Fathom in early 2027, with customer deliveries scheduled to commence in autumn 2027. As the inaugural model on the company’s new affordable EV architecture, the Fathom is expected to play a key role in Ford’s next phase of electric mobility.
