Tata Motors has been honoured with the ETAuto Tech Award 2026 in the EV Technology of the Year category for its innovative 6-in-1 integrated electric powertrain system. The recognition highlights the company’s commitment to advancing indigenous electric vehicle technology through enhanced powertrain integration, improved efficiency, and reduced system complexity.
The next-generation 6-in-1 architecture developed by Tata Motors integrates six key high-voltage components into a single compact unit: the On-Board Charger (OBC), DC-DC Converter, Power Distribution Unit (PDU), E-Motor, Inverter, and Gearbox. By combining functions that are traditionally packaged and sourced separately, the system significantly reduces vehicle weight, wiring complexity, packaging space, and overall costs while improving drivetrain efficiency and reliability.
The integrated design also enables shared thermal management, optimised energy distribution, and enhanced diagnostic capabilities, contributing to improved vehicle performance and operational efficiency.
According to Tata Motors, conventional EV architectures typically rely on multiple discrete high-voltage aggregates, resulting in larger packaging requirements, more complex wiring harnesses, and extended development timelines. The company’s 6-in-1 solution addresses these challenges through a highly integrated system architecture and hardware optimisation.
Developing the technology required substantial changes across vehicle architecture, powertrain controls, software systems, and diagnostic frameworks. Tata Motors engineered new control strategies and software capabilities to ensure seamless coordination among the integrated functions while maintaining stringent standards for safety, reliability, and performance.
The automaker noted that while similar X-in-1 powertrain architectures have been adopted in select global EV programmes, particularly in China, Tata Motors’ implementation represents one of the first large-scale applications of such technology in the Indian passenger electric vehicle market.
The ETAuto Tech Awards are among India’s leading recognitions for automotive innovation, celebrating organisations and individuals driving technological advancements across automotive engineering, software-defined vehicles, electronics, powertrains, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and future mobility solutions.
