India’s electric-vehicle (EV) retail sales rose 53% year-on-year in August, driven by strong growth in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. However, sales declined sequentially from July, indicating uneven momentum across manufacturers and segments.
According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), retail sales of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles stood at 2,98,448 units in August, compared with 1,95,250 units in the same month last year. On a month-on-month basis, volumes fell 9% from 3,27,901 units recorded in July.
FADA said the data was collated on September 4 from 1,467 of India’s 1,469 regional transport offices.
Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Rise 67%
Electric two-wheelers remained the largest contributor to India’s EV retail market, with sales increasing 67% year-on-year to 1,83,204 units in August.
Their share of total two-wheeler retail sales increased to 10.7%, compared with 7.7% in August 2025, highlighting the continued expansion of electric mobility in the segment.
Established manufacturers recorded strong gains during the month. TVS Motor retained its position among the leading players, with electric two-wheeler sales rising 91% to 48,938 units. Bajaj Auto posted the strongest growth among the major manufacturers, with sales surging 236% to 41,114 units.
Ather Energy recorded a 49.7% increase to 28,757 units, while Hero MotoCorp’s electric two-wheeler sales grew 38% to 19,007 units.
Ola Electric, however, bucked the broader industry trend, with retail sales declining 29% year-on-year to 13,852 units.
Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Climb 52%
Electric passenger-vehicle (PV) sales also registered strong growth, increasing 51.9% year-on-year to 30,696 units in August.
EVs accounted for 7.6% of overall passenger-vehicle retail sales during the month, up from 5.8% a year earlier.
Tata Motors continued to lead the electric PV segment with 13,158 registrations, representing a 63.2% increase over August 2025. Mahindra recorded growth of 56.2%, with 6,464 electric PV registrations.
JSW MG Motor, meanwhile, reported a 17.8% decline to 4,622 units.
The segment also saw contributions from new entrants. VinFast recorded 2,199 electric passenger-vehicle registrations, while Maruti Suzuki registered 1,412 units.
Electric Three-Wheeler and Commercial Vehicle Sales
Electric three-wheeler retail sales increased 25.3% year-on-year to 79,846 units in August. Bajaj Auto and Mahindra remained among the key manufacturers driving volumes in the segment.
Electric commercial vehicles recorded the fastest year-on-year growth across the major EV categories, with sales surging 188.3% to 4,702 units. Despite the sharp percentage increase, the segment continues to operate from a relatively small base compared with electric two- and three-wheelers.
EV Market Expands Despite Sequential Decline
The August data highlights the continued expansion of India’s electric-vehicle market, particularly in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. At the same time, the 9% month-on-month decline in overall EV retail sales and the significant variation in manufacturer performance point to an increasingly competitive market.
As the market matures, factors such as product availability, manufacturing scale, pricing, distribution strength and execution are likely to play a greater role in determining the performance of individual manufacturers.
With established automakers strengthening their electric portfolios and new players entering the passenger-vehicle segment, India’s EV market is entering a phase where sustained growth will increasingly depend on manufacturers’ ability to compete at scale while meeting evolving customer demand.
