Amazon.in two-wheeler sales double as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities drive online vehicle purchases

Amazon India has recorded a two-fold year-on-year increase in two-wheeler sales on Amazon.in, with demand increasingly coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Premium motorcycles and electric two-wheelers are leading growth, supported by AI-powered shopping tools and a nationwide network of OEM-authorized dealers.

Amazon India has reported a two-fold year-on-year increase in sales through its two-wheeler store on Amazon.in, highlighting the growing acceptance of online vehicle purchases across the country. The surge in demand is being driven primarily by customers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, who are increasingly opting for premium motorcycles and electric two-wheelers alongside traditional commuter models.

According to the company, nearly two-thirds of all two-wheeler buyers on Amazon.in now come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. The trend is even more pronounced in the electric vehicle segment, where seven out of every ten customers purchasing electric two-wheelers are located outside metropolitan areas.

Amazon’s two-wheeler marketplace currently offers products from more than 20 brands spanning electric, premium, and commuter categories. The platform features leading manufacturers such as Triumph, KTM, Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Hero MotoCorp, supported by a network of over 3,000 OEM-authorized dealerships across India.

The company also revealed that customers from more than 2,300 Tier 3 towns purchased a two-wheeler online for the first time through Amazon.in over the past 12 months, underlining the growing digital adoption in smaller markets.

To simplify the vehicle-buying journey, Amazon is leveraging AI-powered shopping tools including Rufus, LensAI, and Review Summaries. These features are designed to help customers make informed decisions during high-consideration purchases by offering personalized assistance, product insights, and enhanced discovery capabilities.

The latest growth figures reflect a broader shift in consumer behavior, with online platforms increasingly becoming a preferred channel for researching and purchasing vehicles, particularly in emerging markets where digital commerce adoption continues to accelerate.

“The two-wheeler buying journey in India is often long and can get overwhelming with multiple options, fuel types and price points to consider. This feels more restrictive when you have limited selection, especially beyond the metros. For customers, Amazon.in brings together the largest selection by brands, price points and fuel types in one place with full price transparency and the convenience of digital payments. For brands, it expands their reach. Over the last two years, we have built the selection, the tools and the reach to serve both and will continue to expand through the year,” said Aman Lohan, Director – Home, Kitchen and Outdoors, Amazon India.

Customers are choosing premium

Across fuel types, customers are choosing models with premium features, connected technology, advanced safety systems and long-term ownership value. The average two-wheeler purchased on Amazon.in now exceeds ₹1 lakh, reflecting a clear shift toward higher-spec models. Premium motorcycles grew nearly 5x year-on-year, while commuter bikes more than doubled and ICE scooters grew 1.5x during the same period. For electric two-wheelers, the ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh segment now accounts for over half of all EV demand on Amazon.in, a move away from entry-level options toward mid-premium electric mobility.

Demand is coming from beyond metros

Two-wheeler demand on Amazon.in is overwhelmingly a non-metro story. Nearly 2 in 3 customers come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, a share that rises to 7 in 10 for electric two-wheelers. Growth in these cities is accelerating. Kakinada, Tirupati, and Nellore in the South have shown the highest growth with up to 12x increase in bookings YoY. 2-wheeler bookings from Nagaur and Jind in the North and Jamnagar, Bilaspur and Rajkot in the West have grown up to 6x YoY. Purnia and Samastipur in the East have grown up to 7x YoY, emerging as new demand pockets. There is a behavioral shift, and consumers are choosing to shop for a 2-wheeler online. Customers from over 2,300 Tier 3 towns bought a two-wheeler for the first time on Amazon.in in the last 12 months.

AI tools that simplify a complex decision

LensAI allows customers to search by image, helping them identify and explore models they have spotted on the road. Review Summaries distil thousands of customer reviews into concise, easy-to-read snapshots, helping customers quickly understand what owners actually think of a model.
