Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has stated that petrol and diesel-powered vehicles have no long-term future, urging the automotive industry to accelerate its transition toward cleaner fuels and enhanced public transport systems.
Speaking at the Busworld Conclave 2026, Gadkari highlighted the dual challenges of rising fuel imports and increasing pollution levels, emphasizing that a shift to alternative energy sources is inevitable. He pointed out that India’s heavy dependence on fossil fuel imports poses both economic and environmental concerns.
Gadkari called on manufacturers to move towards sustainable alternatives such as biofuels, noting that conventional fuels are creating significant issues related to import dependency and environmental degradation.
He stressed that the future of the transport sector should focus on cost-effective, pollution-free, and indigenous solutions, with a strong push for expanding and improving public transport infrastructure alongside the country’s growing highway network.
Highlighting hydrogen as a key fuel for the future, Gadkari said pilot projects are already in progress, with hydrogen-powered trucks and buses being tested on multiple routes. He underlined the importance of continued research and development in this area.
Additionally, he emphasized the need to upgrade bus quality and safety standards, noting that passenger expectations are evolving. He urged manufacturers to align with global benchmarks in design, comfort, and reliability, while ensuring that safety remains a top priority.
