PV Wholesales rise 2.6% in July; 2-Wheelers decline by 7.2%: SIAM

Though the Passenger Vehicle and Three-Wheeler segments are performing well, there has been a de-growth of Two-Wheelers in July 2023, compared to July 2022 said SIAM. The total production of Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers, and Quadricycle in July 2023 was 20,87,087 units.

Domestic vehicle sales improved in July 2023 compared to July 2022. Though the passenger vehicle and three-wheeler segments performed well, there was a de-growth of -7.2% for two-wheelers in July 2023, compared to July 2022, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said.

The monthly domestic sales of passenger vehicles in July 2023 stood at 3,50,149 units compared to 3,41,370 units during the same month last year.

In the three-wheeler category, all the segments ended in green except e-carts. The total domestic three-wheeler sales for the month stood at 56,034 units, compared to 31,324 units during the same month last year. Passenger carriers grew at a whopping rate with 44,311 units sold compared to the 22,427 units during the same period last year. Sales of goods carriers grew to 8,836 units. E-rickshaw sales stood at 2,745 units and e carts at 142 units.

However, the sales of two-wheelers fell significantly with total domestic sales of 12,82,054 units during the month. Segment wise total units of scooters sold were at 4,28,640 compared to 4,79,159 in the corresponding period last year. Sales of mopeds stood at 36,208 units and motorcycles at 8,17,206 units. The sales of quadricycles were at 118 units.

Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM, said, “Though the passenger vehicle and three-wheeler segments are performing well, there has been a de-growth of two-wheelers in July 2023, compared to July 2022. Overall, we expect that the positive economic environment, good monsoons, and upcoming festive season will support continued growth in the Auto Industry.”

Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said, “Sales of passenger vehicles of July 2023 has been the highest ever in July, with a marginal growth of 2.6%, compared to July 2022. Three-wheelers also posted a decent growth of 78.9% compared to the last year, which is the 2nd highest in the month of July, after the peak of 2018-19. However, after posting growth in each of the previous 3 months in this financial year, the two-wheeler segment de-grew by (-) 7.2% in July 2023, compared to last year.”
