Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has previewed a next-generation Hybrid Sedan Prototype during its global business briefing held in Japan, offering an early look at one of the 15 new hybrid models the company plans to introduce globally by 2030, with a major focus on the North American market.
The prototype highlights Honda’s continued push to strengthen its hybrid vehicle lineup as part of its broader electrification and sustainability strategy.
Speaking at the briefing, Toshihiro Mibe said the company will allocate additional development and production resources toward hybrid vehicles to accelerate product launches ahead of its original timeline.
He emphasized that Honda has made consistent progress in hybrid technology development and believes hybrid vehicles will continue to play a critical role in addressing environmental challenges while supporting the transition toward cleaner mobility solutions.
The upcoming hybrid models are expected to further expand Honda’s electrified portfolio globally as consumer demand for fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles continues to grow.
Honda will begin launching models featuring an all-new hybrid system and next-generation platform starting in 2027. The next generation of the award-winning Honda two-motor hybrid system has been improved through advancements such as expanding the range where the engine operates most efficiently and an increase in the driving efficiency of the hybrid unit. In total, Honda will strive to improve the fuel economy of the next-generation hybrid models by more than 10%, while reducing system costs by 30% and further advance a unique Honda driving experience. In addition, a newly developed electric AWD unit will allow highly precise and responsive motor control.
Honda also provided an update on the development of the company’s next-generation ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), which is planned for introduction starting in 2028. The advanced system will assist the driver with vehicle operations such as acceleration and steering throughout the entire route all the way to their destination, seamlessly on both expressways and surface roads, based on driver inputs to the navigation system. By applying next-generation ADAS to hybrid models, Honda aims to enable more customers to experience the new value that is achieved by combining the “joy of driving” with a stress-free and comfortable mobility experience.
Additional announcements during the Honda Motor Business Briefing include plans to increase hybrid vehicle production at the Marysville and East Liberty Auto Plants, make all Honda North America auto plants capable of producing hybrid models and plans to launch large size (D-Segment) hybrid models in 2029.
