KW automotive develops the KW V3 coilover suspension for the Nio ET5 Sedan

The suspension system ensures shorter braking distances and reduces pitching and rolling movements during high forces such as acceleration, braking, or changes in load during challenging maneuvers.

The KW V3 coilovers from KW Suspensions are the ideal all-rounder. It’s the perfect compromise for those seeking more feedback from their NIO ET5 with a robust and durable suspension. With the KW V3, the ET5 gains significantly in stability. The suspension system ensures shorter braking distances and reduces pitching and rolling movements during high forces such as acceleration, braking, or changes in load during challenging maneuvers.

At Nio, electric vehicles can not only be charged, but Nio is also one of the few electric car manufacturers that allows customers to swap out their batteries for fully charged ones in a battery change station in just ten minutes. This is also possible with the current ET5 sedan, for which the suspension manufacturer KW automotive has now developed the KW V3 coilover suspension. As part of the parts certificate, the Nio ET5 sedan can be lowered continuously between 20 and 45 millimeters on both driven axles with the coilover suspension. As usual with KW V3 coilovers, the compression and rebound stages can be adjusted separately for a more comfortable or stiffer ride. Whether on bad roads or long high-speed sections on the Autobahn, the suspension provides a sporty-comfortable and convincingly safe ride. All around, BBS CI-R alloy wheels in 8.5 x 20 inches with 245/40R20 tires are mounted on the lowered Nio ET5.

Although the Chinese automaker Nio does not yet play a major role in European registration statistics, KW automotive has already developed the KW V3 coilover suspension including a parts certificate. It is currently only available for the ET5 electric sedan. In the ET5, too, the suspension with its multi-valve technology ensures much more direct handling without sacrificing ride comfort. The KW V3 coilover suspension also provides a significant plus in tracking stability and cornering stability, even at high speeds. The body roll of the car body is also reduced. The focus during the development of the KW V3 for the Nio ET5 was on driving fun and a significant increase in driving and lateral dynamics. Which is no wonder with a maximum system output of 360 kW (490 hp). The preset basic setup of the KW V3 coilover suspension can be further refined using the dampers, which can be adjusted intuitively in the compression and rebound stages. The compression stage can be adjusted with twelve clicks and the rebound stage with 16 clicks independently. “Even a few clicks give the Nio ET5 an increase in driving dynamics or ride comfort – depending on the individual setting,” says Florian Johann from KW Brand Management.

Even those who don’t turn a wheel on the damper setup will enjoy the familiar KW V3 suspension design. Here, the KW coilover suspension in the ET5 ensures a ride that is as firm as necessary and yet as comfortable as possible. After all, the suspension plays a central role in the connection to the road and the handling. The dampers and springs influence how quickly the wheels compress and rebound, so that the tires always remain on the road with the maximum contact surface during everyday driving. The suspension also has a major influence on how comfortable the ride is for the occupants. The rebound stage regulates how quickly the suspension spring relaxes after compression. The rebound stage also influences the body’s aftershocks and handling. Increasing the rebound stage makes the handling stiffer, but this can impair ride comfort. The compression stage, on the other hand, always comes into play when the suspension compresses. An increased compression stage reduces the body’s roll movements during braking and in curves, which further benefits the stability of the Nio ET5. A lower compression stage setting, on the other hand, provides a more comfortable ride, but can lead to increased side tilt in curves.

The big advantage of the KW V3 coilover suspension is that the compression and rebound stages are independent of each other adjustable in low-speed and high-speed ranges. This means that even with a stiffly set damping, the V3 coilover suspension still compresses harmoniously on poorly developed secondary roads with many cross joints and bumps. “Many people who drive a car with KW V3 coilover suspension for the first time are always surprised at how high the sporty ride comfort is,” says Florian Johann. “This is even the case with the comparatively heavy electric cars. Our customers and specialist dealers who specialize in electric vehicles always report that the range even increases after installing a KW coilover suspension. For example, this is up to seven percent with the Tesla Model 3.”

In addition to the adjustable dampers, the KW V3 coilover suspension made of stainless steel also allows the Nio ET5 to be lowered continuously. This allows the center of gravity of the Chinese all-wheel-drive electric sedan to be reduced by between 25 and 45 millimeters on both driven axles. Thanks to the BBS Unlimited adapter system with its centering rings, the wheels can be mounted on all vehicles with a five-hole circle pattern. More at www.kwsuspensions.net
