Volvo Trucks begins production of the all-new Volvo VNR in the United States

Volvo Trucks has started production of the all-new Volvo VNR at its New River Valley Plant in Virginia, featuring improved fuel efficiency, enhanced safety technologies and a new platform designed for urban and regional transport operations.

Volvo Trucks has officially commenced production of the all-new Volvo VNR regional haul truck at its manufacturing facility in Dublin, Virginia, strengthening its commitment to delivering purpose-built solutions for urban and regional transport operations across North America. Designed to address the evolving demands of city logistics and regional distribution, the new VNR focuses on enhanced safety, efficiency, and driver comfort.

First unveiled in March 2025, with order books opening six months later, the first production units of the new Volvo VNR have now rolled off the assembly line. Built on a completely new platform — with approximately 90 percent of the truck redesigned compared to its predecessor — the model is engineered specifically for congested urban environments, distribution hubs, and regional routes where manoeuvrability, visibility, and operational precision are essential.

Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America, said the new truck has been developed to address real-world challenges faced by drivers operating in busy city conditions. He highlighted that improved safety systems and driver-focused engineering aim to enhance protection for both operators and other road users while supporting customers’ operational efficiency.

Strong focus on U.S. manufacturing

The all-new Volvo VNR is assembled at Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley Plant in Virginia, where all Volvo trucks for the North American market are produced. The facility is the company’s largest manufacturing site globally and remains a cornerstone of its regional operations.

Volvo Trucks has recently invested $400 million in significant upgrades at the plant, including the addition of a new 350,000-square-foot cab welding facility along with modernised paint systems and improved material flow processes. According to the company, the expansion supports long-term growth plans in North America and reinforces its four-decade commitment to U.S. manufacturing and workforce development.

Improved fuel efficiency and enhanced safety

The new Volvo VNR delivers up to a 7.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared with the previous generation, supported by aerodynamic enhancements, advanced powertrain technologies, and idle-shutdown functionality.

Safety remains a core focus of the truck’s development, with a comprehensive suite of onboard driver assistance technologies designed for operation in dense urban traffic and pedestrian-heavy environments. A redesigned sloped hood and larger panoramic windshield significantly improve forward visibility, while industry-first safety innovations — including integrated side curtain airbags — further enhance occupant protection.

Part of Volvo’s next-generation product strategy

The start of Volvo VNR production follows the introduction of Volvo Trucks’ new long-haul VNL model. Together, the VNR and VNL represent the company’s next-generation platform strategy, delivering application-specific solutions aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and uptime for fleet operators across a wide range of transport applications.
