All India Distillers’ Association (AIDA) has welcomed the publication of new specifications for E22 to E30 ethanol-blended fuels by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), describing the move as a significant step forward in India’s ethanol blending roadmap.
According to AIDA President Vijendra Singh, the new standards represent more than just a technical update and reinforce the Government’s long-term commitment toward higher ethanol adoption, lower crude oil dependence and cleaner mobility solutions.
Among the newly introduced standards, E25 fuel specifications have gained particular importance for the distilling industry. AIDA noted that the introduction of E25 could help absorb surplus sugar and ethanol production capacities currently affecting the sector, providing interim relief to manufacturers and producers.
While welcoming the development, AIDA emphasized that India’s long-term ethanol strategy should continue progressing toward higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100. The association stated that expanding flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) adoption and developing supportive infrastructure and policies will be critical to enabling greater ethanol consumption in the future.
AIDA believes flex-fuel vehicles can play a transformative role in strengthening India’s energy security, reducing vehicle emissions and creating a sustainable long-term market for biofuels. The introduction of E22 to E30 standards is expected to serve as a bridge between current ethanol blending targets and the country’s broader ambition of advancing toward E85 and E100 fuel adoption.
