Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR) to launch “Toyota Vasundhara,” a watershed management and water conservation initiative in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The project will be implemented across nine villages in the Paithan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (CSN) taluks.
Spanning 6,167 hectares, the initiative aims to improve water resource management while expanding irrigation coverage to nearly 20 percent of the project area. It is expected to benefit around 11,268 residents from 2,398 households by promoting sustainable water conservation practices, enhancing agricultural productivity, and strengthening rural livelihoods.
The formal MoU signing ceremony was held in the presence of Mr. Vinay Gowda G.C., Collector and District Magistrate, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, along with senior representatives from Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Watershed Organization Trust.
The Marathwada region, particularly Paithan and CSN blocks, faces severe water scarcity due to extremely low and irregular rainfall averaging 610 mm against the standard requirement of 748 mm. Villages around the Bidkin industrial area are increasingly vulnerable to drought conditions, with degraded agricultural landscapes affecting farmer livelihoods. Approximately 78% of farmers in the region report unreliable water access, while 93% face significant seasonal income shocks. This water stress forces farmers to rely on single-crop cultivation, resulting in low and unstable incomes and perpetuating cycles of rural poverty.
Recognizing the need for sustainable water resource management and conservation, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has partnered with Watershed Organization Trust, a specialized organization with proven expertise in watershed development programs across India. Building on TKM’s successful implementation of similar water conservation programs in North Karnataka with WOTR, the Toyota Vasundhara program will implement community development initiatives, soil and water conservation measures, water resources development and need-based livelihood support. Through systematic watershed management, the initiative aims to increase irrigation potential, enable diversified agriculture with multiple cropping patterns, and strengthen farmers’ income resilience while conserving critical water resources.
Project implementation will prioritize community participation, ensuring that local stakeholders actively contribute to planning, execution, and long-term management of water conservation structures. Expected outcomes include increased water availability for agricultural and domestic use, improved soil health and agricultural productivity, diversified cropping systems providing multiple income streams for farmers, and strengthened livelihood resilience for rural communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vinay Gowda G.C, Collector and District Magistrate, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, said, “The Toyota Vasundhara initiative represents a meaningful partnership between industry, civil society, and government to address one of Marathwada’s most critical challenges. Watershed management is essential for agricultural sustainability and rural prosperity. We appreciate Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s commitment to this region and look forward to supporting this collaborative effort in building water security and climate resilience for our farming communities. It will give a fillip to Jalyukta Shivar (Water sufficient farmland) Abhiyan of Government of Maharashtra”
Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “Toyota Vasundhara reflects our belief that sustainable development must address the interconnected challenges of water, agriculture, and rural livelihoods. By partnering with WOTR’s expertise and implementing proven watershed conservation practices, we are investing in long-term resilience of farming communities and creating meaningful impact in the regions that we operate in”
Since 2001, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has been committed to uplifting communities through initiatives spanning education, environment, road safety, skill development, health and hygiene, and disaster management. Through need-based interventions and strategic partnerships with specialized organizations and government bodies, TKM continues to contribute to India’s development goals while advancing its global philosophy of “Creating Mobility for All.”
