Hyundai Motor India inaugurates Pune Plant, Targets 320,000 units annual capacity by 2030

The plant will manufacture the all-new Hyundai VENUE for export to more than 35 markets. The inauguration also coincides with HMIL’s 30th anniversary in India and its achievement of four million cumulative passenger vehicle exports.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has inaugurated its new smart manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Pune, Maharashtra, marking a major expansion of its manufacturing operations in India. The inauguration, held on October 14, 2026, coincides with the company’s 30th anniversary in India and its achievement of four million cumulative passenger vehicle exports.

The Pune facility has an initial annual production capacity of 170,000 units, which HMIL plans to increase to 320,000 units by 2030. The plant will manufacture the all-new Hyundai VENUE exclusively for export to more than 35 international markets, further strengthening India’s position in the company’s global manufacturing and export network.

The inauguration was led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of South Korean Ambassador to India Seong-ho Lee; Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar; Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung; HMG Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang; Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz; and HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg.

The new facility represents a significant milestone in Hyundai Motor Group’s long-term commitment to India. The group has announced an investment commitment of USD 15.5 billion through 2032, while HMIL plans to invest INR 11,000 crore in phases at the Pune plant.

Hyundai Motor Group Highlights India’s Strategic Importance

Commenting on the inauguration, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung said India remains one of the group’s most important strategic markets globally. He noted that the Pune facility reflects Hyundai’s long-term commitment to the country and confidence in its growth potential.

Chung also highlighted HMIL’s achievement of four million cumulative vehicle exports, describing it as evidence of the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and the country’s growing contribution to Hyundai Motor Group’s global operations.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the new plant and the four-million export milestone reinforce India’s emergence as a global automotive manufacturing hub. He emphasised that investments in advanced manufacturing technologies, innovation, localisation and skill development would contribute to economic growth, employment generation and the expansion of Maharashtra’s automotive ecosystem. He also reaffirmed the state government’s support for Hyundai’s future investments and expansion plans.

HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the Pune plant marks the beginning of a new phase of growth for the company in India.

“The inauguration of our Pune plant marks the beginning of HMIL’s next chapter of growth in India. We will invest INR 11,000 crore in phases at this facility. Beyond expanding manufacturing capacity, the facility will drive industrial development, innovation and employment generation in the region.

“Supporting this vision is a strong regional supplier ecosystem, with 55 supplier partners having already invested nearly INR 4,600 crore in the state. Together with tier-II vendors, the ecosystem has created more than 18,000 employment opportunities in Maharashtra, reinforcing the region’s emergence as a key automotive manufacturing hub. As we celebrate 30 years in India, we remain committed to creating long-term value for our customers, partners and communities,” Garg said.

Pune Plant to Expand Hyundai’s Manufacturing Capacity

The Talegaon facility currently has an installed annual production capacity of 170,000 vehicles, with HMIL targeting an increase to 320,000 units by 2030. Combined with its existing manufacturing operations in Chennai, the expansion is expected to take the company’s total annual production capacity in India to approximately 1.14 million vehicles by the end of the decade.

The Pune plant also includes an engine manufacturing shop with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. The phased investment of up to INR 11,000 crore will support the expansion of manufacturing operations and meet future production requirements.

The all-new Hyundai VENUE will be manufactured exclusively at the Pune facility for export to more than 35 countries. The arrangement is expected to strengthen HMIL’s export capabilities while expanding the role of its Indian manufacturing operations in serving international markets.

The Talegaon facility also marks HMIL’s first major manufacturing investment outside Tamil Nadu. The company’s existing manufacturing plant at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, will continue to operate, while its registered office remains in Tamil Nadu.

AI and Industry 4.0 Technologies Drive Smart Manufacturing

The Pune plant has been developed around Industry 4.0 manufacturing principles, incorporating digital technologies designed to improve production efficiency, product quality and operational performance.

Key technologies deployed at the facility include AI-based quality inspection, predictive maintenance, digital simulations and augmented reality-based workforce training. These systems are integrated through Hyundai’s proprietary E-FOREST digital factory platform, which supports the use of digital tools across manufacturing processes.

The adoption of these technologies reflects Hyundai Motor Group’s focus on next-generation manufacturing, process optimisation and the development of smart factories. The facility has also received the 2026 Red Dot Award for workplace design, recognising its approach to the design of the manufacturing environment.

Supplier Investments Strengthen Maharashtra’s Automotive Ecosystem

HMIL’s expansion in Pune is supported by an established network of automotive component manufacturers in Maharashtra. According to the company, 55 Tier-1 suppliers are already operating in the region, with combined investments of approximately INR 4,600 crore in the state.

Nearly half of these suppliers are located within a 50-kilometre radius of the manufacturing facility, enabling closer coordination across the supply chain and supporting manufacturing integration.

Together with Tier-2 vendors, the supplier ecosystem has generated more than 18,000 employment opportunities in Maharashtra. Hyundai’s manufacturing expansion is expected to further strengthen regional supplier capabilities, localisation and employment generation as production scales up.

The growing supplier network also supports the development of a more integrated automotive manufacturing ecosystem around Pune, bringing component manufacturers and other industrial partners closer to the vehicle production facility.

Hyundai Motor India Achieves Four Million Cumulative Exports

The inauguration of the Pune plant coincided with HMIL achieving four million cumulative passenger vehicle exports from India since commencing export operations in 1999.

The company identifies itself as India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter to date. The milestone highlights the contribution of its Indian manufacturing operations to Hyundai’s international markets and reinforces the country’s role in its global production network.

In addition to its export performance, HMIL has recorded domestic sales of nearly 10 million vehicles over its 30 years of operations in India, reflecting its established presence in the country’s passenger vehicle market.

The addition of the Pune facility is expected to expand the company’s manufacturing footprint, provide additional production capacity and support its efforts to serve both domestic and international markets.

Research Collaborations Target Electrification and Future Mobility

Alongside its manufacturing expansion, HMIL is pursuing nearly 40 research collaborations with seven Indian academic institutions. These initiatives focus on battery technology, electrification and future mobility, with the objective of supporting the development of technologies relevant to the automotive industry’s changing requirements.

The collaborations complement Hyundai’s investments in manufacturing infrastructure and technology development in India, as the company continues to strengthen its engagement with local research institutions and the wider automotive ecosystem.

With the inauguration of the Talegaon plant, Hyundai Motor India is expanding its production capabilities, reinforcing its export network and deepening its presence in Maharashtra. The facility’s planned capacity expansion, smart manufacturing technologies and established supplier base position it to play a greater role in the company’s next phase of growth in India.
