Hyundai and Kia Unveil Innovative Snow Chain-Integrated Tyre Technology

Hyundai and Kia reveal an advanced snow chain-integrated tyre technology utilizing shape memory alloy modules for effortless deployment, significantly enhancing safety in winter driving conditions.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have unveiled an innovative snow chain-integrated tyre technology, a significant leap forward in enhancing safety during winter driving conditions. The technology leverages shape memory alloy modules for automated deployment, eliminating the complexities associated with traditional snow chains.

Key Features of Snow Chain-Integrated Tyre Technology:

1. Shape Memory Alloy Modules: The technology incorporates shape memory alloy modules positioned inside the wheel and tyre. These modules automatically extend, forming a ‘snow chain,’ upon receiving an electrical signal.

2. Automated Deployment: Unlike conventional snow chains that require intricate installation and removal, this technology allows drivers to activate the shape memory alloy snow chains at the push of a button, simplifying the process and improving safety.

3. Radial Grooves and ‘Pizza’ Design: The tyre assembly features radial grooves arranged at regular intervals, resembling a pizza. Shape memory alloy modules are inserted into these channels, contributing to the tire’s enhanced winter performance.

4. Electric Current Activation: The shape memory alloy, compressed into an ‘L’ shape during normal driving, transforms into a ‘J’ shape when an electric current is applied. This extension pushes the module out of the tyre, establishing contact with the road surface for improved grip and stability on snowy roads.

5. Wear Detection Feature: In normal driving conditions, if the tyre’s surface wears down to the height of the module, drivers receive a clear indication of the degradation, prompting timely tyre replacement.

Future Plans and Considerations:

The snow chain-integrated tyre technology is currently patent-pending in both South Korea and the U.S. Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to conduct further technological development, durability and performance tests, and regulatory reviews. Mass production of these innovative tyres will be considered based on the successful outcome of these evaluations.

Joon Mo Park, Head of the Advanced Chassis Development Team, expressed the companies’ commitment to transforming advanced technologies into practical solutions, reflecting their dedication to customer safety and convenience. The groundbreaking technology is poised to redefine winter driving safety, offering a seamless and effective solution for Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the future.
