To tackle the shortage of EV charging infrastructure and boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, Tata Motors, the country’s largest electric car manufacturer, has set a target to install 4 lakh EV charging stations nationwide by 2027.
As part of its “Open Collaboration 2.0” initiative, Tata Motors plans to deploy 30,000 new public charging points in collaboration with charge point operators (CPOs) and oil marketing companies (OMCs). The initiative also includes setting up 500 TATA.ev Mega chargers, compatible with all EV brands, along with superfast chargers featuring four charging bays.
“To drive the rapid expansion of EVs in India, we have launched ‘Open Collaboration 2.0,’ with a goal to scale the charging network to over 400,000 points within the next two years in collaboration with leading CPOs,” said Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. “This initiative will enhance charging speed, reliability, and user experience while strengthening the viability and growth of CPOs,” he added.
Tata Motors’ Electric Vehicle division has played a key role in advancing EV charging infrastructure. The company initially worked with Tata Group affiliates to develop private and home charging solutions. Through its ‘Open Collaboration’ framework, introduced in 2023, Tata Motors has been partnering with CPOs and OMCs to expand charging networks at key locations, particularly along highways, to enable seamless long-distance travel.
“TATA.ev’s cumulative impact includes the deployment of over 1.5 lakh private and home chargers, 2,500 community chargers, and 750 chargers at TATA dealerships across more than 200 cities,” the company stated in a press release. “With ‘Open Collaboration 2.0,’ TATA.ev is fast-tracking the growth of India’s EV charging ecosystem, aiming to more than double the number of charging points to over 400,000 within the next two years.”
The TATA.ev Mega Chargers will be accessible to all EV brands, while TATA.ev customers will receive priority access and tariff benefits. Users can seamlessly locate, access, and pay for charging via Tata Motors’ IRA.ev app, eliminating the need for multiple charging platforms. The chargers will be managed by partner CPOs.
