BYD’s Denza to launch Z9 GT and D9 in India by end-2026

BYD’s luxury brand Denza will enter India by the end of 2026 with the Z9 GT electric performance fastback and D9 luxury MPV, both expected to arrive as CBUs.

BYD’s luxury marque Denza is preparing to enter the Indian market by the end of 2026 with two premium models – the Z9 GT performance fastback and the D9 luxury MPV. Both models are expected to arrive as completely built-up units (CBUs), with Denza positioned above BYD in the company’s Indian portfolio.

While BYD’s existing range is expected to cater to the Rs 20 lakh-80 lakh price bracket, Denza will focus on the premium and luxury segments, with its products expected to start at around Rs 80 lakh.

Denza was established in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG, now Mercedes-Benz Group. Mercedes-Benz later exited the partnership, after which BYD repositioned Denza as a premium luxury brand in 2022.

Denza Z9 GT: 1,156hp Electric Performance Fastback

The Z9 GT will serve as Denza’s performance flagship in India. Although the model is offered globally with both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the Indian market is expected to receive the fully electric version.

The India-spec Z9 GT will feature a three-motor setup comprising one motor at the front and two at the rear. The system produces an impressive 1,156hp, enabling the 2.9-tonne fastback to accelerate from 0-100kph in just 2.7 seconds. Its claimed top speed stands at 270kph.

Power comes from a 122.5kWh battery pack, which delivers a claimed combined WLTP range of 600km. Charging will be another major highlight, with BYD’s 1,500kW Flash ultra-fast charging technology claimed to replenish the battery from 10 to 97 percent in just nine minutes.

The Denza Z9 GT is expected to be priced between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore in India.

Denza Z9 GT: High-Tech Cabin and Advanced Features

The Z9 GT employs cell-to-body construction, integrating the Blade battery cells directly into the vehicle’s structural architecture. It also features rear-wheel steering and a sideways crab-crawl function, along with powered doors.

Inside, the five-seat cabin gets a five-screen setup, including two displays that relay feeds from the exterior rear-view cameras. The four outer seats feature adjustable under-thigh support, heating, ventilation and massage functions, while the rear seats also offer reclining functionality.

The Z9 GT will also feature Level 2+ advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), further strengthening its technology-focused positioning.

Denza D9: Electric Luxury MPV for India

The D9 will mark Denza’s entry into India’s luxury MPV segment. Globally, the model is available with both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but the Indian version is expected to be the front-wheel-drive electric variant.

The D9’s electric powertrain produces 313hp and 360Nm of torque and is paired with a 103kWh Blade battery. It offers a claimed combined WLTP range of 520km, while DC fast charging is supported at up to 200kW.

The Denza D9 is expected to be priced at around Rs 80 lakh, positioning it above the MG M9 while undercutting the Toyota Vellfire.

Denza D9: Luxury-Focused Interior

The D9 features a 2+2+3 seating configuration, with the second-row captain seats serving as the cabin’s primary luxury feature. The seats offer powered adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions, with controls integrated into the armrests.

The second row also gets fold-out tables and extendable leg rests. Other premium features include three-zone climate control, a Dynaudio premium audio system and full leather upholstery.

Like the Z9 GT, the D9 uses cell-to-body construction. It also features an active body control system designed to reduce fore-and-aft pitching during acceleration and braking, with the aim of improving passenger comfort.

Denza India: Exclusive Showrooms and Premium Positioning

Denza is expected to operate through exclusive retail outlets separate from BYD dealerships. The brand will initially focus on major metropolitan markets, with Delhi-NCR and Mumbai likely to be among the first regions to receive Denza showrooms.

The D9 will enter India’s relatively small but expanding luxury MPV segment, competing with models such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and Mercedes-Benz V-Class. The Z9 GT, meanwhile, will target the much smaller performance-EV category, with the Porsche Taycan emerging as one of its closest alternatives.

The two models are expected to play distinct roles in Denza’s India strategy. While the D9 could appeal to an established customer base seeking luxury MPVs, the Z9 GT is likely to act as a technology and performance showcase for the brand.

Denza’s India entry reflects BYD’s strategy of moving further upmarket without extending its mainstream BYD brand into the ultra-premium segment. The D9 could provide the company with a strong entry point into India’s growing luxury MPV market, while the Z9 GT’s 1,156hp powertrain and extreme performance could establish Denza’s technological credentials.

However, the bigger challenge for Denza will be building brand recognition and desirability in India’s luxury-car market, where brand perception and badge value remain almost as important as the product itself.
