SKF Introduces Next-Generation Ball/Tapered Roller Wheel Bearings

The innovative design offers increased strength, is 10% lighter than traditional wheel bearings, and reduces friction by 30%

SKF Automotive has unveiled its latest innovation, the Hub Bearing Unit (HBU) wheel bearing, which uniquely combines ball and tapered roller bearing elements into a single unit.

This cutting-edge design offers enhanced strength while being 10% lighter than traditional wheel bearings. Additionally, the HBU Ball/Taper Wheel Bearing boasts low-friction technology, reducing friction by an impressive 30% compared to existing competitors in the same vehicle category. Having entered serial production in 2022, the demand for these hybrid ball-taper bearings is rapidly growing, with production volumes approaching 1 million units annually.

Specifically engineered to meet the requirements of electric vehicle (EV) pickup trucks and vans, the HBU Ball/Taper bearing provides both low friction and high-speed performance. The combination of ball and tapered roller bearings allows it to efficiently manage increased vehicle weight and performance demands. The reduced friction also extends battery range, reinforcing SKF’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

SKF has already secured a significant contract in the US, with an annual volume of 1.5 million bearings. In addition, the company has been awarded another major project in Europe, focusing on light commercial vehicles. This new bearing concept is also gaining momentum in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
