India poised to become world’s largest automobile market by 2030: Nitin Gadkari

India is striving to become the world's largest automobile market by 2030, with a strong emphasis on electric and alternative fuel vehicles. To support this growth, the government is bolstering highway infrastructure, aiming for 60 km of daily construction, and expanding EV charging networks with 670 planned roadside amenities.

India is on course to emerge as the world’s largest automobile market by 2030, according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Speaking at the HPCL Times Drive Auto Summit & Awards, Gadkari emphasized the country’s commitment to advancing electric, biofuel, and alternative fuel vehicles. He also highlighted the government’s ambitious target of constructing 60 kilometers of highways per day. Additionally, the minister announced a directive requiring all two-wheeler manufacturers to include at least two helmets with every vehicle sold at no additional cost to buyers.

Addressing concerns about range anxiety among electric vehicle (EV) buyers, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that 670 roadside amenities equipped with charging stations are being developed. He emphasized the need for interoperability among charging standards used by car manufacturers, noting that regulations have been introduced to ensure a unified charging system. “Now, a single charger will be sufficient,” he assured.

On India’s highway development plans, Gadkari dismissed concerns about funding, revealing that ₹50,000 crore was recently allocated to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to reduce its debt. He noted that while road assets are being steadily monetized, new construction projects require multiple approvals, which can slow progress. Expressing his ambition, he said, “I yearn to achieve 60 km of highway construction per day,” while acknowledging that the current pace stands at 36-38 km daily.

Emphasizing India’s automotive industry growth, Nitin Gadkari stated, “In the next five years, we aim to become the world’s leading automobile market.” Currently, India holds the position as the third-largest automobile market globally.
