The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has stated that the Indian auto industry is unlikely to be significantly affected by the US’s new reciprocal tariffs, as automobiles are not included in the latest order.
“Autos are already subject to 25% tariffs under Section 232, announced earlier on March 26, 2025, and exports to the US remain limited,” said SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon.
The US recently imposed a 27% tariff on Indian goods as part of its reciprocal tariff move targeting around 60 countries. However, auto, auto parts, steel, and aluminium—already covered under earlier tariffs—are excluded from this new round.
SIAM added that it will continue monitoring the situation, but does not foresee any major impact for now.
