Chandigarh to stop registering non-EV 2Ws from July, cars from December

The Chandigarh administration has announced that it will stop the registrations of ICE (internal combustion engine) two-wheelers by July and four-wheelers by December for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The official statement says that the aim is to discourage the use of non-electric vehicles under the UT’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2022.

“In order to achieve the aim of eco-friendly and green transportation in the city, the Chandigarh Administration notified the Electric Vehicle Policy 2022. The aim of the ban was ten percent reduction in four wheelers and 35 percent in two wheelers in the first year i.e., 2022 as compared to the preceding year. The targets for the current financial year 2023-24 are 20% reduction in four wheelers and 70% in two wheelers.”

As per the policy, the number of non-electric two-wheelers that can be registered in the Union Territory this fiscal is fixed at 6,202, while the limit for non-electric four-wheelers stands at 22,626. A total of 4,032 two-wheelers have already been registered so far in this fiscal year, which means that only 2,170 petrol-run scooters and motorcycles can now be registered until March 31, 2024. Similarly, registration of fossil-fuel run four-wheelers will not be done once the target is met for the financial year.

The target for ICE four-wheelers for this fiscal is likely to be achieved by December, while the target for ICE two-wheelers is expected to be achieved by July itself. Hence, one will not be able to register a non-electric two-wheeler or car in Chandigarh until the next fiscal – once the Administration-set target is achieved of course.
