Gadkari unveils Mihan Expansion Plan, transforming city into Cargo Capital and Tech Hub

Vidarbha’s future appears to be on a promising trajectory as Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister and Member of Parliament representing Nagpur, unveiled ambitious expansion plans for the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (Mihan). The expansion aims to extend Mihan towards Gumgaon near the Samruddhi Expressway and Hingna, solidifying Nagpur’s position as the country’s cargo capital.

Addressing a gathering of MPs, MLAs, and industrialists from Vidarbha, Gadkari sought valuable input for the proposed “Advantage Vidarbha Summit” initiated by the Association for Industrial Development. Gadkari shared that Rs. 2,400 crores had been allocated for these projects, marking a significant investment in the region.

“Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has sanctioned one INR 1,200 crore cargo project (near Butibori) and my ministry has sanctioned another one near Sindi dry port of an equivalent amount,” Gadkari said.

Currently, Mihan provides employment to around 68,000 individuals, but Gadkari has set a formidable target of employing approximately one lakh youths before the next Lok Sabha elections. The vision for Mihan’s growth encompasses an international convention center from Abu Dhabi’s Lulu group and the establishment of units by prominent organizations like Wipro, Persistent Systems, HCL, and Infosys. Aviation majors like Dassault are already contributing to the region by manufacturing parts for Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

The proposed Advantage Vidarbha Summit represents an initiative aimed at curbing farmer suicides in the region and generating a substantial number of jobs in the coming years. Gadkari shared those discussions with GMR authorities in Delhi revealed plans for the modernization of Nagpur’s international airport following an order from the Supreme Court. The Taj Group has also been engaged in discussions regarding the establishment of a hotel in the city, with 17 potential sites for the project. A Dutch company is set to commence a garbage-to-CNG conversion project in Nagpur soon.

Expanding on his vision for the city, Gadkari highlighted the replacement of the old grain market with a modern one featuring ample parking space, designed by a Dutch architect. Similarly, he emphasized the plan to demolish shops and establishments at Shahid Chowk, making way for the construction of six markets with adequate parking and public facilities.

Reflecting on the potential of the region, Gadkari lamented the missed opportunity of granting permission to Jamsetji Tata to establish a unit in Gadchiroli, which could have transformed the district into a prosperous hub akin to Tata Nagar. Gadchiroli’s significant potential for mining was also underscored, offering opportunities for additional investments in the area.
