The Goodyear Eagle name became synonymous with motorsports in 1980 when the company merged its racing and high-performance consumer tire branding. By leveraging racing technology, Goodyear launched the first official Eagle road tire in 1981, followed by the Eagle VR50, designed for high-speed European roads.
Eagle tires quickly gained popularity, becoming original equipment for performance cars like the Chevrolet Corvette and Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
