Kia forays into EV market with EV6

South Korean automaker Kia is gearing up to foray into the electric vehicle segment in India with the launch of its high-end premium electric sedan EV6 later in 2022. Pre-bookings for the electric crossover will open on 26 May 2022, the automaker confirmed. The company currently sells models like Seltos and Sonet in India and plans to sell only 100 units of EV6 in the country.

Tae-Jin Park, MD & CEO, Kia India said, “We are embarking on the next level Kia experience in India. We are launching our most celebrated EV globally, the EV6 – a true game-changer, designed from the ground up to make electric mobility fun, convenient, and accessible by combining a highly impressive real-world driving range, ultra-fast charging capabilities, a spacious high-tech interior.”

According to the company, the EV6 will be imported via the CBU route and is likely to be offered in a single variant.

The new vehicle will be based on the Hyundai Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (EGMP) and will come with two battery options – 58 kWh and 77.4 kWh, both offered in single and dual motor versions. The 58 kWh battery with the single electric motor produces 168 BHP, while the dual-motor version has a combined output of 232 BHP. The single-motor version with the 77.4 kWh battery packs 226 BHP, while the dual-motor version produces 321 BHP. The top-of-the-line dual-motor GT variant puts out 577 BHP and 740 Nm. EV6 is the most hi-tech Kia ever made, Park added.

“With EV6, we don’t just want to reach out to the customer who is in the market to buy an electric car, but we want to reach out to every potential customer who wants to own a premium car,” Park stated.

With the launch of EV6, Kia will execute its global vision for sustainable mobility in India and drive its agenda of carbon neutrality by 2045, the automaker stated. The carmaker is also planning to introduce an entry-level EV in India. The small electric SUV is scheduled to go on sale in 2025, it added.
